A funny thing happened to the Winnipeg Jets on their way to an historical franchise-worst 10th consecutive loss. They made a different type of history.
On Tuesday night in Montreal, Winnipeg trailed4-0 with under 3 minutes left in regulation. What happened next was probably more unlikely than winning a Lotto 649 or Powerball ticket.
The Jets stormed back with four goals to send the game to overtime. In overtime, it was only fitting that stay at home defenceman Dylan Samberg won the game for the Jets to complete a comeback for the ages.
Unsung hero
The Jets got a desperately needed emotional boost midway through Tuesday’s third period. Defenceman Tyrel Bauer dropped the
gloves with Habs defenceman Arber Xhekaj. This heavyweight tilt — followed by a bout between Jets captain Adam Lowry and Florian Xhekaj gave Winnipeg a jolt to awaken the team from its slumber.
It was no coincidence that Bauer later scored the first goal for the Jets and assisted on the next one by Morgan Barron to notch a Gordie Howe Hat-trick. If Bauer can occasionally chip in points and the Jets can somewhat control play when he is on the ice, he may be a mainstay in the lineup. Let’s not put the cart before the horse.
But there’s no doubt that Bauer got the comeback ball rolling on Tuesday.
Samberg sends Jets to victory
Dylan Samberg’s OT winner was his second goal of the season. He now has six points (2G, 4A) through 16 games. With age and career mileage beginning to slow Josh Morrissey down, the Jets need Samberg to be the de facto No.1 defenceman and occasionally chip in some offence in addition to playing against opposing teams top lines.
Up until this rough stretch where the entire team except Kyle Connor have struggled, Samberg’s underlying numbers and analytics have always been sound.
Jets waive Lambert
The Jets placed forward Brad Lambert on waivers for the purpose of assignment to their AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. Surprisingly to some, he cleared today. It’s hard to fathom that no one saw him as a low-risk option. Truth be told, Lambert has never developed much offensively. Even so, he wouldn’t be the first discarded player to blossom with a change of scenery.
Lambert registered a single assist — no goals — in the 11 games he played with the Jets this season.
Hellebuyck’s message to Jets fans
Connor Hellebuyck finally posted his long overdue farewell to Jets fans and the city of Winnipeg. There was nothing groundbreaking or surprising in his post.
Meanwhile, the stage is now set for November 10 when the New Jersey Devils come to town. Before that, the Jets return home to host one of the few teams below them in the league standings: the Vancouver Canucks.
