Avalanche Reassign Three Prospects to CHL

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today the following transactions:

  • Christian Humphreys, C (Kitchener – OHL), has been reassigned to his junior club.
  • Max Curran, C (Edmonton – WHL), has reported to his junior club for rehab.
  • Linus Funck, D (London – OHL), has reported to his junior club for rehab.

Christian Humphreys

Humphreys, 19, was selected by the Avalanche in the seventh round of the 2024 NHL Draft (No. 215 overall). The Pennsylvania native is a right-shot forward who can play both center and wing.

Last season with the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL, he showed flashes of high hockey IQ and reliable playmaking, posting 44 points in 67 games.

Returning him to junior gives him a chance to log big minutes in all situations and continue refining his two-way game before he makes the jump to the professional level.

Max Curran

Curran, 19, is another 2024 draft pick, taken in the fifth round (No. 161 overall). At 6-foot-3, he brings size and strength down the middle, with the versatility to play wing.

He spent last year with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL, where he contributed 34 points in 64 games.

Known for his ability to protect the puck and extend possession, Curran projects as a power forward type who can be effective in a bottom-six NHL role down the line.

Reporting back to Edmonton for rehab ensures he can continue developing in a familiar environment while recovering properly.

Linus Funck

Funck, 18, was Colorado’s fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft (No. 118 overall). A defenseman for the powerhouse London Knights, the Swedish-born blueliner already stands out for his size (6-foot-3) and physical play.

Funck defends well along the boards, uses his long reach effectively, and has shown steady improvement in puck retrieval and transition.

While he still needs time to round out his game, being back with the Knights during rehab allows him to grow at his own pace while competing in one of the CHL’s toughest environments.

Avalanche Training Camp Outlook

With these moves, the Avalanche continue to trim their roster as training camp progresses.

The focus over the next two weeks will shift heavily toward special teams preparation, with head coach Jared Bednar emphasizing details on both the power play and penalty kill.

The goal is to elevate intensity and ensure that structure and execution are in place before the season opener.

The Avalanche have 14 days left to finalize their roster before the regular season begins. They will return to preseason action on Saturday, Sept. 27, against the Dallas Stars at 5:00 PM MDT.

Fans can also look forward to expanded local coverage, as Altitude Sports recently extended its broadcast partnership with TEGNA stations 9NEWS and My20, ensuring 20 Avalanche games will be available free to Denver viewers this year.

By making these early decisions, Colorado allows its prospects to develop properly in junior while keeping its main camp focused on NHL and AHL competition.

For Humphreys, Curran, and Funck, the coming year will be about growth and opportunity. For the Avalanche, the countdown to the regular season has officially begun.
