Backup Derby: Flames Sign Russian Goaltender Ivan Prosvetov

The Calgary Flames and free agent netminder Ivan Prosvetov have come to terms on a one-year, one-way contract worth $950,000.

Originally a fourth round pick by the Coyotes, the six-foot-five goaltender played four seasons between the AHL and NHL within the Arizona organization before being claimed off waivers by the Colorado Avalanche prior to the 2023-24 regular season.

With a collective save percentage of .898 in the AHL and .881 in the NHL over five seasons, Ivan took his game back to Russia, signing a one-year deal with his hometown team in CSKA Moskva.

The now 26-year-old bounced back nicely, posting a 20-16-2 record, a .920 save percentage and a 2.32 goals against average over 38 regular season games. He also went 2-3-0, .918 and 2.90 across five playoff games—enough to earn him another shot at a backup position in the NHL.

Stiff Competition

Battling it out in training camp for the right to back up Dustin Wolf will be Devin Cooley—also six-foot-five. The Los Gatos, California product started the season strong, winning 17 of his first 23 starts, but fell into a spiral along with the rest of the team, losing 18 of his final 22 games. Cooley’s two-year contract includes the second year converting to a one-way deal.

Both seek to prove that they can rebound into an NHL backup position; time will tell who lands the spot. One certainty is that the Flames currently have three one-way contracts at the goaltender position, and Dustin Wolf isn’t going anywhere.

Depth Defenceman

Flames General Manager Craig Conroy also inked 25-year-old defenceman Nick Cicek to a one-year, two-way contract on Tuesday afternoon. The six-foot-three left shot blue liner had three goals and 14 assists with Adler Manheim of the German DEL in 2024-25.

Cicek is expected to add size and bite to a Calgary Wranglers defence core loaded with puck-moving defenders.
