Binnington To Oilers Makes Sense

Could Jordan Binnington be heading to the Edmonton Oilers? The St. Louis Blues are about to have a fire sale towards the NHL trade deadline. Despite acquiring Tristan Jarry earlier this year, the Oilers’ net is far from secure.

Anyone who watched the 2026 Winter Olympics saw the real Jordan Binnington. Yes, he has a miserable 8-17-6 record, but the Blues are awful this season. He proved something to a lot of people in Milano Cortina. When the pressure reaches a boiling point, he’s able to up his game. During the Olympics, he recorded a 1.78 GAA and a .917 SV% while helping Canada to a Silver Medal. He stopped 26 of 28 shots in the heartbreaking overtime loss to Team USA in the Gold Medal game.

His sudden resurgence changes the landscape ahead of the NHL trade deadline. The Oilers are in “win-now” mode, but their goaltending remains a liability. Jarry is not giving them what they were hoping to get. The current tandem of Jarry and Connor Ingram is not going to cut it in the playoffs.

Jarry’s play has been inconsistent, and he’s prone to getting bitten by the injury bug. Edmonton needs to improve its goaltending, and Binnington could be the answer.

Binnington Could be the Oilers’ Missing Piece

We all know Edmonton can score its way out of problems in the regular season, but playoff hockey is different. The Oilers need a goaltender who can steal a Game 7. Offense gets tighter in the playoffs, especially against a heavy trapping team. Binnington, who already has a Stanley Cup ring, just proved to the world that he thrives under pressure. He plays with the kind of swagger that the Oilers roster can feed off of in tight games.

What makes a deal for Binnington realistic is the salary cap. His cap hit is similar to Jarry’s. Sending Jarry to St. Louis along with some draft picks will give the rebuilding Blues a solid return while the Oilers get the high-stakes starting goaltender they need.

Edmonton Oilers Receive:

  • Jordan Binnington (G) (Cap Hit: $6.0M AAV, signed through 2026-27)

St. Louis Blues Receive:

  • Tristan Jarry (G) (Cap Hit: $5.375M AAV, signed through 2027-28)
  • 2026 2nd-Round Pick (Edmonton)
  • 2027 1st-Round Pick (Edmonton)

For the Blues, taking Jarry is a necessary addition to acquire the 1st-round pick out of Edmonton. A move that will accelerate their rebuild. For Edmonton, giving up future assets is a must during this “win-now” window.
