It wasn’t a hockey masterclass. But the Vancouver Canucks prospects got their feet wet at the Prospect Showcase against the Seattle Kraken. The Kraken wonn 7-3, on Saturday. The Canucks prevailed, 5-2 , on Sunday
5 takeaways I had fron the two games this weekend.
1. Rogowski intrigues
The selection of Brook Rogowski in the second round of the NHL Draft in 26 intrigued me.Rogowski continues to intrigue me. Obviously, the size stands out. However, he showed some nifty playmaking skills and found some chemistry with both Braeden Cootes and Aaron Novotny. I wonder if we see a line of Cootes, Rogowski, and Novotny in training camp. All three stood out this weekend.
2. Minio stands out on Sunday
Meanwhile, Sawyer Mynio also intrigues me. The 21-year-old defenceman is about to go to his fourth Canucks training camp. He made a couple of nice defensive plays Sunday. He also was QB’ing the power play. His feet were moving. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect him to make the NHL roster. However, I expect good things with the Abbotsford Canucks. While we are talking, Alonso Gosselin also had a solid game Sunday.
3. Mixed results from the goalies
The Canucks organizational goaltending situation is interesting. Not only in Vancouver but also in Abbotsford. Alexei Medvedev allowed seven goals Saturday. Ty Young and Aku Kosevenko showed well on Sunday. We are expecting the Vancouver Canucks to carry three goalies. Let’s see what happens in Abbotsford.
4. Traffic to the net
The Canucks created a lot of chaos in front of the Kraken net on Sunday. It wasn’t only the Cootes line. It was all four lines. I don’t recall the Vancouver Canucks doing that a lot last year. I wonder if we see that more with the Canucks this year.
5. Scouring the Blueline Hopefuls
Defence will be an area where Vancouver head coach Manny Malhotra and new Abbotsford head coach Ryan Papianoannou will be hoping to see growth. The Vancouver Canucks allowed an NHL league high 314 goals last year. Abbotsford allowed 234 goals, which was 23rd in the AHL.
Those are my five quick takeaways. Training camp starts on Friday.
