The Philadelphia Flyers returned to the FTC in Voorhees for the second day of their 2026 training camp. Head coach Rick Tocchet and his staff structured Day Two in identical fashion to Day One. Meanwhile, the lone tweak was that Group A and Group B reversed their on-ice and off-ice work schedule. That’s par for the course early in camp. Group C went early in the morning once again.

Team Toyota Training Camp Spotlight: Matvei Michkov
This was an easy one to pick. Matvei Michkov stole the show on Day One One of Training Camp. He earned well-deserved rave reviews between his on-ice performance and his first English press conference off the ice.
Conditioning
Michkov reported to camp last year carrying roughly 200 pounds on his 5-foot-10 frame. It was not “good weight”. He came to camp with a body fat percentage significantly north of 20 percent. In today’s NHL, an acceptable body fat percentage generally ranges from 8% to 12%, with elite players often averaging around 9% to 9.5%.
What a difference a year makes! With his intensive off-season training program and carefully monitored diet overhaul, Michkov dropped north of 25 pounds from September 2025 to September 2026. In terms of body fat percentage, he was recently measure below 10 percent.
It’s a night-and-day difference and showed both off and on the ice.

Practice Drills
Michkov sailed through the drills with good pace and a sense of confidence. The player noticed the difference. So did head coach Rick Tocchet and captain Rick Tocchet.
“He looks quick out there, him and Barks (Denver Barkey) were buzzing around,” Tocchet said. “We were doing the concepts that we talked about. He did look very quick out there. He really wanted to work on his shot this summer, he spent a lot of time working on his shot. And he was pushing the pace on the laps, I love that.”
Added Couturier, “You can definitely tell he’s put in the work, he’s put in the sacrifices, He looks in good shape. He’s skating well out there, making plays. So it’s exciting to see. He’s always been a big part of our team. We expect that out of him and he seems to want more.”

Michkov’s first English press conference
The biggest news from Day One: Michkov conducted his first-ever English press conference. Translator Slava Kuznetsov was on hand to make sure Michkov fully understood questions, but Michkov gave all answers entirely in English.
The young player admitted he was nervous about clearing the English interview hurdle, but he did very well in expressing himself. Afterwards, the young Russian had a broad smile on his face, especially when the attending media clapped for him. The day meant a lot to him.
“I started in Philly with zero level English. Second year (was) a little bit better, now a little bit better more. Now this is my first interview in English. This is hard for me. Guys, sorry. But I think now much better. I think Philly is my second home. I feel the same about my first home and my second home. I feel the same, so good. Thank you everybody for your support. And the atmosphere,” Michkov said.

Day 3 Preview: Scrimmage Day
If you plan to attend Flyers camp at the FTC on Saturday, plan to come early. The schedule is as follows:
GROUP A & B:10:20 a.m. On-Ice (Opposite rinks Flyers rink/ Phantoms rink for A & B)
10:40 a.m. A vs. B Scrimmage(Flyers rink)
GROUP C:11:00 a.m.
Can’t attend in person? Brian Smith and Jason Myrtetus will have a live streaming broadcast of the scrimmage on the Flyers platforms. I will post a link around 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Foerster and Konecny discuss the start of camp
Flyers forwards Travis Konecny and Tyson Foerster met with the media together at the end of their practice session on Thursday. The two engaged in a good-natured chirping battle on the ice. On Day One, Konecny played left wing on a line with rookies Jett Luchanko and Porter Martone. Meanwhile, Foerster played right wing with frequent linemate Noah Cates in the middle. Cates also saw reps on left wing. Veteran checker Noel Acciari played on left wing to complete the line.
