Flyers defenseman Cam York has a lower-body injury

General manager Daniel Briere met with the local media prior to the start of Monday’s practice at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees. Briere discussed the team’s opening night roster and the outlook for various players.

Meanwhile, Briere delivered a piece of bad news just three days before opening night in Sunrise, FL. Defenseman Cam York, who had a stellar training camp, has a lower body injury. He’s considered day-to-day for now. However, Briere admitted that the exact prognosis is unclear for now. It could be day-to-day. However, it could also end up being longer than a week.

It’s unclear how York injured himself. He finished Saturday afternoon’s game against the New Jersey Devils. Afterwards, York sat at his locker in the dressing room for a while. Subsequently, he left the room to get postgame treatment (nothing alarming in and of itself). He was on the postgame media request list. Ultimately, however, he remained in treatment and was unavailable for an interview.

More from Briere

Veteran defenseman Dennis Gilbert, who cleared waivers over the weekend, remained with the NHL team. He practiced Monday. If York has to open on the season on injured reserve, he will be unavailable for at least the next week. Other tidbits from Briere:

  • 19-year-old Jett Luchanko made the opening-night roster for the second straight year. However, he may not play every game to start the year. Briere said the evaluation process extends into the season. Luchanko may still end up back in the OHL, as he did last year.
  • Briere said that he prefers if Emil Andrae plays a lot of minutes for the Phantoms rather than being in and out of the Flyers’ lineup. Rick Tocchet later added that the team will go with a blueline-by-committee if York misses time. Additionally, the head coach reiterated that none of the No. 6 defenseman options — Egor Zamula, Noah Juulsen, Gilbert (or, by extension, Andrae) showed enough in camp to solidify a spot.
  • However, Briere said of Zamula that, at least for now, the GM considers the Russian defenseman part of the top six on defense.
  • Briere said that, before camp, he felt Adam Ginning was a longshot to make the team. Ginning had a solid camp (especially relative to the competition) and earned a spot. Nevertheless, Ginning also remains part of an ongoing competition for playing time.

Practice Day Notes

Rick Tocchet cautioned the attending media not to read too much into Monday’s practice lines combinations. He called the situation one of “putting puzzle pieces together” in terms of who will start in Florida on Thursday. it’s notable that neither Jett Luchanko nor Nikita Grebenkin took regular reps when the team ran lines. The defense pairs rotated in York’s absence.

Tuesday is an off-ice day for the Flyers. The team departs for Florida. They will practice at Amerant Bank Arena on Wednesday to prepare for opening night.
