ParticipantI gotta say, it’s a nice timing for me to write about appreciating Newhook and he scores twice. xD

Sure is.
What did you write?

ParticipantIn years past I would have turned off the TV after trailing 3-1 … not anymore, these young Habs are hungry and they never quit.
They’re so much fun to watch after having sub-standard teams over the last 30 years.October 23, 2025 at 11:26 pm #44641Garfield

Playing with Kapanen and Demidov helps … they’re a fast line that keeps the opponents on the back foot.

ParticipantThe penalties were killer, but Montembeault is a disaster. Absolutely awful.

ParticipantGood blog Hugo.
Also, good notice towards Newhook. Really like how he has worked with Kapanen and Demidov, while also increasing his responsibility in other areas.
This might be the player I had hoped he would be when the Habs made the trade.

ParticipantWho is the #1 goalie again?
What an absolute disaster.
Fall behind 3-1, come back to make it 5-3, then get blasted out of the water 6-5.
Dobes better get the next start.

While I agree (as written in the blog) that Dobes needs to be the guy until proven otherwise at this point, I can’t think of one bad goal Montembeault allowed against the Oilers.
Could he have been better? Yes. Was he “an absolute disaster”? No.
Refs gave the Oilers that game on a silver platter but Montreal needed to at least find a way to get a point there imho.

Won’t blame him for the tips, but goals 5 and 6 looked weak.
He is not good positionally at times and playing too far back in his net, like he is too worried to let a goal in / trying to play it safe.
I did not watch past the 1st period, but from the highlights, he did not look confident at all.
End of the day, the numbers speak for themselves.
5 games, 2 wins, 3.82GAA, 0.842 Save %.

Oh he needs to be better, absolutely.
Good thing Dobes is playing incredibly well until Monty finds his game. It gives us time.
Still a frustrating loss and if anyone were an absolute disaster yesterday, it was the refs. Holy.

sure but objectively speaking the contrast in performances between Dobes and Monty was accentuated by the fact Dobes faced a Calgary team that is struggling to score goals, while Monty faced a much more offensively aggressive Oilers team, and it was the second night of a back-to-back for the team in front of him.
Dobes deserves the start on Saturday but both goalies aren’t necessarily worlds apart like you think they are.

I guess if you want to be a #1 goalie, you got to win those types of games.
If he was losing, but his numbers were much better, this would be a very different conversation.

I totally agree Hugo.
also, watching Carrier following his man all the way up to the blue line on that last goal was pure joy. I said it before and won’t repeat it… you all know what I think.October 24, 2025 at 9:48 am #44713Pat1993

that was kind of my point, the numbers are inflated (or deflated, depending on how you look at it) with a game like last night since the opposing team was more aggressive and scored goals with fewer shots than on the night before.
but at this point I don’t think it’s worth even talking about it, you clearly aren’t a fan of Monty and never will be, and that’s fine.
