Andrae sitting again for Juulsen is another dumb decision. Allegedly because Toc doesn’t want to mess with the PK. Juulsen combined for a TOTAL of 6 seconds of PK time the last 3 games.
Again with size over skill.
On the opening goal last game Michkov was on the ice with Zegras and Tippet when he made that ridiculous pass to help setup the goal but he will again be starting on the 3rd line.
Despite all of Tocchet (and Briere’s) hand wringing:

His metrics show a criminally underused forward being held back by a 61 year old coach’s preconceptions. He is helping keep the Flyers afloat despite his coach.
Same goes for his treatment of Andrae. Not Juulsen’s BIG, nothing else matters.

Just put together a longer dive into the Panarin situation and why I think the Flyers not pursuing him may have been a missed opportunity — not just from a scoring standpoint, but from a development and mentorship standpoint with Michkov.Panarin isn’t just an elite player — he’s someone who could have helped Michkov navigate the transition to the NHL. There are real examples in league history of young stars improving faster when they have that type of veteran support.
The Kings got Panarin for a prospect + a conditional third and signed him for $11M for two years. The Flyers had the cap space and flexibility to make that kind of move without compromising long-term health.

For 58 minutes, the story wrote itself.
Nick Cousins, former Flyers draft pick and Stanley Cup winner beats Vladar on a defensive mixup involving Juulsen for the game winning goal. Will Juulsen be to valuable to the PK, with 6 SECONDS IN LAST 4 GAMES, to sit after the olympic break? Tocchet says he’d like to get Andrae some time after sitting for over a month but the PK is to important.
While they tied it up with the goalie pulled the Sens quickly ended the game once overtime started. Once again the Flyers skaters were vastly outplayed and only Vladar kept them in it.
I hope to hell Danny sells at the TDL but he won’t because he’s still looking towards making the playoffs next season rather than rebuilding. Same goal as this season.

Panarin would only waive for the Kings. It was the only place he was willing to be traded to and gave them a sweetheart extension deal. The Flyers were never in.
I understand the thinking but Frank is correct, Panarin wanted to go to the playoffs and picked his team while giving them a sweetheart deal to make it work. He held all the cards with a full NMC. GMs are to quick to give them out knowing that most likely that some other GM will have to deal with the downside. Same with Coots. Flyers can’t do anything but cut his ice time, they can’t do anything without his permission.

This team is garbage. How you can’t see this beyond me. Some decent depth pieces. Brutal coach.
imagine thinking having dvorak lead the forward in ice time on a consistent basis and playing risto 20 a night is going to get this team anywhere. Committing 6 years to dvorak reaks of incompetence.
Would love to know what rock bottom for this franchise is. Hopefully Martone pulls a cutter.

Brink and Barkey both in the Top 9 leaves you with too small a Top 9. They’ve also got a few 185-190 guys, not small, just average. Now Carolina has a small team up front too, but look at their smaller guys. Aho, PPG guy, Jarvis, close to it, Ehlers, not far behind Jarvis and all three are much better producers than Barkey or Brink.
With Andrae in, along with average to smallish for Dmen York and Drysdale, it’s a small blue line too.
I have no problem with Grebenkin or Bonk who is still a kid and will fill out to 200. Martone is the guy. No worries there, just not 100% sure he’ll turn pro next year. Small with average at best skills gets smashed in the NHL regular season let alone playoffs.

lost in all this is danny boy loves this roster. he thinks they are not far away. there is next to no hope for anything in the next 5 years

Briere has some serious thinking to do over this break. The team is falling hard and fast out of the playoff hunt, but as usual, not far enough to get a real shot at a difference maker in the draft. They needs centers in the worst way, and he needs to start seriously thinking about dealing some of that winger depth for a center.
Shane Wright for Tippett has gained some traction in the internets. Would both sides entertain a deal like that? I hope Briere is working the phones because this team needs impact centers even more so than D in my opinion. They have none on the team or in the system, that is a fact.

Nobody stepped up enough to take it from him. Bump was not as advertised and Grebenkin won himself a 4th line role. To be the man you’ve got to beat the man. Brink is still not part of the solution. Martone will fix that.

If you mean serious cup contention, it’s more about adding. They can use another #1/2 center, a Top 4 Dman, a goalie, more size and toughness. Maybe they can get one or two of those slots filled internally. If not they have to go shopping.
