The cap going up a bunch is going to take a lot of fans off guard on the contracts middling players will get.
4.77 for Hayton who is a career 45 point player will be cheap.Also the US lost after cheating to get a player back in the game..looks great on them
So I was toying around with some math and it made me wonder if the Carlsson offer is as bad as it looks. Maybe we still look at things a bit too negatively thinking of the Covid cap lockdown and don’t really consider how it rises by about 9% a year nowadays.
This year it jumped by 9% and went from $95.5 mill to $104
Next year they’re figuring on 9% again and a jump to $113
Look at it if this continues at 9% a year
2026-27: $104
2027-28: $113
2028-29: $123
2029-30: $134
2030-31: $146By the end of his contract he’ll only be 12.3% of the cap hit, hell, by the middle of it he’ll only be 14.6%.

The Leafs could potentially get a better player for a lower cap hit for a 2nd round pick and nearly 5 million in cap space in the UFA market. Hayton isn’t that good. The Leafs entire bottom-six is filled with guys who score 10 or less goals getting paid double what they’re worth. The only benefit would be that Hayton is at least young but overall, he’s been a bust for a top 5 pick that of course Chayka made the mistake of drafting that high.

4.775 AAV is the upper limit for compensation and it’s for 1 year and then, he’s a UFA. If Utah matches, they cannot trade him for a year.

Personally, I don’t like the Giroux fit. I think we could still use someone younger, faster and tougher. If they can move out 2 guys, I would try Tolvanen, if it was under 4m
The Leafs are hellbent on being the oldest, slowest team in the NHL for the next two years until Matthews decides he’s moving on.
Giroux is great at FOs and can pass the puck so he’s an option on the PP2 and on the top line RW for periods of time.
He’s probably better off in Philadelphia though. They could pay him more and he could end his career where it started.
Personally, I don’t like the Giroux fit. I think we could still use someone younger, faster and tougher. If they can move out 2 guys, I would try Tolvanen, if it was under 4m
