before Burube Matthews was .75 goals per game with him he is like .40
Has to be some coaching impact if its just goals that matter. maybe some injury stuff idfk

Oh it’s both, the injury…at first. Then he had to recover into a new style, one which uses him against defensively more against the opposition’s top tier guys…I think? Maybe it’s out there with the hope he’ll be doing the offensive role more but he’s not? I don’t know.

I agree Doz. Going with both a green GM and coach was a massive misjudgment by Shanahan, who was a green president himself. None of them knew how to handle it.

Yeah, I’m no JT hater by any means but they shouldn’t have signed him and just rolled with Kadri. Also the deal tossed at Rielly was far too kind for what he is. I wouldn’t have even hated the price tag without a NMC. I hope he’s reaching a point where he will personally want a fresh start on a new team, I assume it will be a pretty even trade unless he has one of his step up seasons but I’m not banking on it since he hasn’t looked good under Berube’s game yet.

Either way, let the younger guys play for the rest of this year along with the core and the primary guys that will be put up for sale in the off-season now *shrugs*

    This is mostly correct.

The Leafs won’t choose to rebuild but Matthews can and will force their hand. If he decides to leave (he should), Nylander will waive his NTC and Tavares, in his old age, will realize he’s better off chasing a Cup elsewhere. Rielly will take a hike too.

If they run back the same team and don’t fire Berube, this team will suck again. The UFA market is empty. The available options are old and underwhelming. Will the Leafs overpay to entice old, former star players or mediocre players to join an obviously dysfunctional, bad team in a terrible market?

The wild card is if they fire Berube and hire DeBoer. DeBoer is the ultimate runner up coach. He can turn a team around and get them to lose in the Finals.

Matthews and Nylander could easily get the Leafs a boatload of 1sts, top prospects and young roster players. If the Leafs trade them both at the 2027 draft, tank 2028, tank 2029, by 2030 they have an excellent chance to return to the playoffs. Also, July 2029 gives the Leafs the opportunity to sign McDavid as he might be a UFA and the Leafs would have unlimited cap space to overpay him while the rest of the team is still on ELCs.

Yup, that’s my guess, until their primary asset/captain bails on the team not much will change. The goaltending and D won’t get mixed up without deals and the forward moves will sound bigger than they are in the media.

However once Matthews decides to head out I can see ownership keeping some of the valid youth and dropping/moving everything else to simply start over again, hopefully this time around they choose experienced leadership upstairs, and yes I’m dating that point back to Dubas and Keefe as well.

It’s looking like won’t take that long, remember Matthews is a western American boy so he didn’t grow up watching the leafs, their games would have been on at f’n supper time for him, so if they don’t get their shit back together in a hurry he’ll bail, head back to the US, and likely play over in the west.

And when that happens the leafs will be a bunch of old guys, Nylander, some half decent younger guys and that’s it, nobody decent will sign here because of it and they will forced into a rebuild. I’m guessing 1 more year tops and if they suck ass again they sell Matthews July 2nd 2027 in his final year at half the cap hit once everything but $900K has been paid to him. The return would be sweet.

I can almost guarantee MLSE will not allow a tear down followed by a rebuild starting now. They are gonna milk this ca$chow as long as possible as usual.

As usual they will try to Bandaid this thing, and they will fail. Pelley has the option of firing Treliving. But if the next GM is told not to rebuild, they will know this is doomed to fail. Too many holes, too many needs, not enough assets. What credible GM is going to want to take on a plan doomed to fail, only have to admit failure and rebuild in a year or two?

My best guess is Tree will be back. Because this is the Leafs, after all, and they will do the exact opposite of what they should do.

This is exactly I was thinking is going to happen.
They need to sell tickets and it happens every single year.
MLSE understands that things can get even worse if they start full rebuild and fans may not appreciate such actions.
