I feel a lot better these last few days, from just HOPING we can hang out to the 5th overall to knowing that we’re getting a really solid player (regardless of who we choose). I lean towards McKenna. Yeah, he’s on the small side, but he’s 18 and is likely still growing and will fill out. Biggest thing is he’s not a pussy like Matthews/Nylander/Marner.
I heard talk of trading Knies now that we’ll (likely) have McKenna. Fuck that, Knies is a stud, and he’s got 3″ and almost 60lbs on Gavin. We need both.
McKenna absolutely plays like a pussy and he’s definitely built like one in NHL terms. His drunken street fight doesn’t change how he plays on the ice. All the things retards accuse Marner of not doing is how McKenna plays the game. He’s a small, perimeter player who avoids contact and the dirty areas of the ice. Also, when a player refuses to play defense, it’s usually because they’re either lazy or a pussy or both. On that front, neither Matthews nor Marner play like a pussy defensively because they actually get back and defend which requires extra effort, determination and discipline. Nylander and McKenna are floaters who hope they can score one more than their opponents can and usually it ends with them losing when it matters.
I agree its just risky to get cute and trade down or pick another player #1 like one of the Dmen.

It’s up to the scouting department to gather as much information as possible and make the right pick. If the Devils had traded down to 4th and taken Makar, that’s a “risk” that turns into Stanley Cups.
That’s a blatant PR line. If the directive really was to do whatever it takes to win a Cup, they would have never hired Chayka and Sundin as the pair to do it nor would Pelley be the one hiring them.

Looks like we’re running out of steam. Two emotional days and now it’s hibernation time, until June. Do we care about any of the series? Maybe hoping that Buffalo smites Montreal. Carolina is a bore. Anaheim vs Vegas is the kiddies table series. The winner gets swept by the victor of Colorado vs Minnesota. The only final that would be acceptable is Minnesota vs Buffalo.

The issue with trading down, you get into a scenario like 2016. The first overall pick, Matthews vs the second overall pick, Lainie. Same could be said about 1984, when Lemieux went first overall and Kirk Muller went number 2. Take the first pick and bank it as a cornerstone of your franchise. If you Fuck around, you find out.

Nylander got too much time left on his contract to retain %50 even with the cap going up 104M but could also be used to reach the cap floor.I think they would have very little interest in trading down. They also don’t have another 1st to trade. Unless they trade their 1st for next year which could be a lottery pick because they could suck again so they would either not give it up or top 5 protect it.
Nylander is signed until 2030. 50% retained for an extra 1st or a top prospect is worth it. Leafs won’t need the cap space until 2030 anyway if they blow up the team. The floor would be way over 80 AAV by then.
Chicago would be my prevered trading partner if possible.
For trading down to or for trading Matthews and Nylander?
They already have Bedard and have tanked multiple times. Don’t think they care enough about McKenna or Stenberg to trade up. Also, they probably want to push to make the playoffs so they’d be more likely to trade for established guys like Matthews and Nylander than another 18 year old.
I think if the Leafs retain 50% on Matthews and Nylander, they could create a huge bidding war. Every single contender would be throwing the farm at us for either one for a cap hit under 7 AAV.
