imo the biggest factor to the Leafs not being able to get shit over the finish line is the cap only going up 3 million from 2019-2023
They loaded up on 4 players and the cap went stagnant and they couldnt fill in the gaps enough with cheaper players.Also never moving away from Rielly as the #1 or finding a true #1

Drafting Nylander, Marner and Matthews in consecutive years landed nine straight years of playoff hockey, you just couldn’t find the right mix with all that money tied up in four players. The biggest reasons the Leafs failed with that core is because they let Hyman walk, they traded Kadri for nothing, they signed Tavares for too much money (when they didn’t need another player that did what they already had) and because they signed Rielly to a huge extension. The smaller reasons was constantly trading 1st round picks and prospects for broken down, old, over-rated players at the deadline and getting nothing out of them when it mattered most at the cost of selling off the farm.
They would have been fine had they not destroyed the team by signing Tavares. At the time, it seemed like a giant victory but he was the 2nd highest paid player in the NHL and provided nothing in the playoffs. He was never an MVP. Never won any kind of award. He was a giant waste of money. His contract forced the Leafs to pay their younger core players even more on their next extensions which further destroyed the cap situation.
If Leafs management had realized they already had 3 offensive minded core players and saved the money they wasted on Tavares for the blueline and goaltending, the odds are strongly in their favor that they would have had more playoff success. Tavares was a net negative on the team. He was horrendous defensively and offensively disappeared in the playoffs more so than any other Leafs core player.
The only other signing that was a destructive as Tavares was the Rielly extension. He fell off a cliff offensively and his defense has always been horrid. That 18-19 million dollars could have been spent on 3 or 4 solid depth players be it 2nd liners, defensive D-men or an upgrade in goaltending and it would have made this team much more competitive in the playoffs.

I’d love to see Matthews come ‘home’ (and it to be to the Rangers) but I highly doubt it happens this summer – that’ just a silly pipe dream for us fans of US teams.
He will ride out this contract and make all the money he can with endorsements while he is the captain of the Leafs (because let’s not pretend any US based team would provide him the opportunity to make the endorsement money he does in Toronto) and then come home. It may be during his last contract year like at the deadline but no shot he’s leaving Toronto this summer.
Nylander I’m not sure on. I think he’s pretty happy in Toronto and may be fine with sticking around knowing he will be the last man standing of the big 3 draft picks you named and may be able to be part of the Leafs going deeper than they have since the 90’s.

McKenna isn’t that valuable. He ain’t that guy. Nobody is going to “ponie” up that much to get him. He’s not Celebrini, McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby etc.
It’s also why, even if the 8% chance miracle comes through and the Leafs are drafting 1st, McKenna doesn’t change this team enough to undo the disaster it has become.
Matthews just said recently he can’t predict his future in Toronto. Nylander has no interest in a rebuild. That’s the two most valuable pieces they have hinting their time might be up in Toronto.
It’s time to rebuild.
