    Sunny Mehta to New Jersey.

Makes sense. He grew up a fan of the Devils, he worked there before and their team isn’t a total shit storm. Zero pressure.

The main issue was overpaying the 3 players.

Willie should have been signed for 5.5 – 6. Marner 8 max and matthews 9 max.

Had dubas not caved, the leafs would have had more money to build a better team.
Also thinking marner and matthews were going to lead thus team anywhere was also a mistep.
They really needed a real number 1 D as well.

That was impossible the day they gave Tavares 11 AAV. The Leafs absolutely fucked themselves. Bad drafting, bad trades and bad UFA contracts destroyed whatever chance they had to have a Cup winner led by Matthews, Marner and Nylander. Being in a division with contenders such as Boston, Tampa Bay and Florida made the Leafs window of opportunity small and their margin for error razor thin. Management didn’t do what was required to make the difference.

Anything can happen UG. There maybe GM out there willing to pay that price.
The 1st over all pick does have some value to it in my opnion which is good as yours is….

Anything that stupid happening usually happens with the Leafs being the idiots that overpay. That’s not an opinion, that’s a fact proven by history.

The 1st overall pick has as much value as the best player available in that draft. McKenna is not that valuable because he is not McDavid. If your opinion is that some team is going to grossly overpay for it, your opinion is uninformed and will be proven incorrect.

imo the biggest factor to the Leafs not being able to get shit over the finish line is the cap only going up 3 million from 2019-2023
They loaded up on 4 players and the cap went stagnant and they couldnt fill in the gaps enough with cheaper players.

Also never moving away from Rielly as the #1 or finding a true #1
fine player but never a true #1

Bullshit excuse. The Leafs dropped dozens of games to horrible teams, non-playoff teams and Western teams, including Vegas TWICE.

injuries and bad goaltending…was an excuse someone just used..I just read it

    Fucking… ROASTED. Fourth degree burns.

    Well played, good sir.

McKenna isn’t that valuable. He ain’t that guy. Nobody is going to “ponie” up that much to get him. He’s not Celebrini, McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby etc.

It’s also why, even if the 8% chance miracle comes through and the Leafs are drafting 1st, McKenna doesn’t change this team enough to undo the disaster it has become.

Matthews just said recently he can’t predict his future in Toronto. Nylander has no interest in a rebuild. That’s the two most valuable pieces they have hinting their time might be up in Toronto.

    It’s time to rebuild.[/quote]

the timing of it all was just a disaster for the Leafs, just as they had to pay Mitch, Willie and AM the cap died. Yes other teams function in the same cap, but they didnt have 3 young stars all getting big raises at the same time.
extra cap space would allow them to keep Hyman. the 2021-2023 teams were good, having Hyman would help and whoever else they could add.

it would compound because they had to spend draft capital to try and fill in the need for those players instead.

its amazing how Fast Tre tanked the team. he sucks

Or…don’t sign Tavares to the 2nd highest paying contract in the NHL and create a scenario where your young star players (who all have potential to be better) are all going to want more than that on their next deal.

Whether the cap went flat or went up, every single one of those young guys were going to demand more because of what they gave Tavares.

Also, if the Leafs actually knew how to draft players outside of the lottery picks, they might have had cheap depth on ELC. Instead, they draft pylons like Robertson who to this day have not stepped up into a meaningful role. The Leafs drafting on the blueline was even worse. Years of inept scouting did far more damage to this team than not being able to spend more money.

High player salaries is always the cop-out for Leafs fans and the franchise. Everybody seems to think you can just spend more money on UFAs and that’s what wins a Cup. Sorry folks but that only works in the MLB, not in the NHL. It didn’t work in 1998. It didn’t work in 2008. It won’t work in 2028. The Leafs need to spend 100 million on scouting and player development before they spend it on UFA salaries.

The cap going flat is a horseshit excuse. It was the same for everybody and plenty of other teams that were maxed out on cap space still found ways to make deals happen. The Leafs didn’t. They just kept throwing futures away for old, broken players and wondering why it never worked. The Leafs drafting gave them dogshit for depth up the pipeline. Even if the cap went up, Tavares still would have been an overpayment and total ass in the playoffs.

The Leafs had too many of the same type of players and too much money invested in them. The cap going up wouldn’t have changed that.
