When they traded Kadri the die was cast. The rest was just the poetic tragedy that was sure to follow. I hung in there until the bitter end. Not sure why anyone would stick around now. Nobody has that kind of time to wait for another rebuild. Kids maybe, but you’re all adults. Go do adult shit.

As for JT, you’ll never convince me you wishful thinker. This guy had his ELC, then nothing more than a 6 year contract to make him a UFA, at which point he bolted for Toronto, signed a 7 year deal, then gave a big discount to stay for 4 more years. Keep dreaming UG, the partial NMC for the last 2 years arent for him, they’re for the leafs, in case they need his cap space for a true cup run, nothing more.
Because Matthews had a rib injury last year and couldn’t heal because he wouldn’t sit out for a long time. This year, he’s playing with significantly less help from a lack of an elite playmaker.
He’s fully capable of being an elite player but he’s doing it alone now and that’s a difficult adjustment because he’s never had to play in the NHL without the elite playmaking of Marner.
Tavares came to Toronto because he jumped from a non-playoff team to a contender. Yes, he was “coming home” but if the Leafs were still in last place, he would have never come. Just like he won’t stay if they trade all their best players and tank again. The wishful thinking is that he wants to lose in the last years of his career. He took a “discount” because he thought he was helping the team win, not because he was being nice.
Marner made Matthews better, it’s an obvious fact. Marner got Matthews better passes, better shots, better scoring chances and was a lot more useful on the PP. Marner missing is a huge part and it’s why Berube can’t find anybody to play with Matthews. Matthews was defensive dog shit vs. the Devils and that’s the type of game Marner helped stabilize him.
For the 100th time, if the Leafs blow up the team and trade everybody, the cap will be at 100 million by 2028. And their roster will be filled with ELCs. They could afford to overpay to keep some guys under 30 and it would be just fine.

Sundin is not JT, not from TO and did not grow up loving the team. Mentally their attachment to the leafs is not equal, please get a grasp on this.
Knies is an American who will only stay under 53.53% taxation when the league has limited bonuses to 60% now to push talent back down to the southern US with a talented team. The league doesn’t want the cup won by a Canadian team, hell they don’t even really want it won by northern US teams, they want it won where they’re trying to build the league. Financially everything is groomed for teams in low taxation states. So it’s a safe bet that unless a Canadian team is a competitor don’t expect an talented American to want to play up here.
What your brain can’t seem to grasp is that Tavares won’t play for a lottery team. No matter how much you want to believe he will only play for Toronto, the REALITY is, he only wants to be here if he can WIN. If the Leafs were a lottery team, he would have never joined. And he won’t stay to be on a lottery team as his career winds down to a close and he still has no Cup to show for it.
Knies may or may not want to stay. But since he’s under contract, they’re better off finding that out later and not sooner.

The player doesn’t give a rats ass about their cap hit, they’re just not are an individual who cares about their take home, you know, like everyone else does when it comes to their salaries? Do you care more about what your pay cheque is or what it costs the company you work for?
And yes, I’m starting to see the 2 year window as well. Unless there is some sort of unexpected big deal that occurs.

Matthews is not injured and has not lost his ability to play or score. He’s just struggling without Marner. His value and his contract would still bring the Leafs a sky high return no matter what some retards think.
Same goes for a lot of other assets the Leafs have. There are teams that overpay at the deadline every, single year. Usually, it’s a team stupid like the Leafs, but there are many others. Teams that are going hard for the playoff run will give up 1st round picks and prospects. The Leafs just have to make the players available.
The Leafs have two chances left. This year (they suck and aren’t going anywhere) and next year. That’s a really small window of opportunity. But that’s all they got left. After that, they have to trade everybody and start the rebuild sooner rather than later. Matthews signed a 4 year deal for a reason. He’s done playing here if there is no chance to win. And it’s hard to blame him after what they did to this team.
