ParticipantI cannot remember the last time an assistant coach took over as head coach on a permanent basis and was successful. Lane Lambert took over for Barry Trotz for the NYI and that did not work out well. Brad Larsen took over for Torts in CLB, not a memorable tenure. I do not believe the Flyers will elevate Shaw to HC. I believe the choice will be Pat Ferschweiler. The connection to Jones is helpful, but his resume by itself warrants consideration. I understand the comparison and concern to Hakstol and Quinn. However, Ferschweiler won the National Title with a program that has not been known as a college hockey powerhouse. Hakstol and Quinn never won a championship. Ferschweiler is more comparable to Jim Montgomery who won a title at Denver. Monty has done pretty well in the NHL after his time with Denver.

ParticipantI know the rumor is Tocchet would be the front runner if he leaves VAN. Been a unique two years for him, Jack Adams winner to the dumpster fire this season turned into for the Canucks. I’m curious with the organization putting so much emphasis on culture and the locker room, how much responsibility does Tocchet get for the locker room issues with the Canucks? Also, I do wonder with Tocchet at this point in his career, what would his interest level be coming to a team that really is not a serious Cup contender for at least a few more seasons. The ties to the organization are obvious, but he is now 61, I would assume the chance to compete for a Stanley Cup is pretty important to him.

ParticipantI do not believe the Flyers are just waiting on Tocchet to make a decision and the fall back would then be Shaw. It would make no sense for Briere not to interview a decent sized list for the first HC he will hire. If the results do not improve dramatically, the next HC could be the only one Briere gets to hire. Certainly, it would make sense to keep the interviewing process out of public view, but to have the decision pretty much already made makes little sense to me.

InactiveI really hope they take their time with this decision. They need a guy who is younger who can teach but who also has some gravitas behind him so he can command respect. In a perfect world I would love to see Carle join the team so he can grow with this roster. I don’t get the feeling we have the type of vets who would tune out a guy like him.
What we don’t see is another old head taskmaster who thinks bag skates and getting in people faces is the only way to teach. There is a difference between being firm and being constantly negative.

ParticipantI do believe any HC candidate would want to know what Briere’s plan will be for goaltending. I doubt there will be much interest in this job to just run back the same cast in goal and see what happens. The rumor is Kolosov will stay in the KHL next season, so another season of Ersson and Fedotov would suggest more of a willingness to compete in the McKenna sweepstakes instead of a playoff spot. Doubtful a candidate like Sullivan or Tocchet would want that much uncertainty in goal for the upcoming season. Maybe a first time NHL HC or limited experience HC in the NHL would be more comfortable with more uncertainty in goal. To be close to the playoffs a team save % should be at or at least near .900%. Flyers last season save % .879

ParticipantI appreciate the insight on Berube and Bylsma. I still have my concerns about Shaw being the next HC. Last time, Shaw coached in the NHL was 05-06 season for 40 games. Before that stint, roughly 2 seasons in the AHL with Cincinnati. I would feel more comfortable with a candidate with more HC experience then Shaw’s resume. That experience does not necessarily have to be limited to the NHL. Just my personal preference where the team is currently at.

Thanks. I’m not certain who the next HC should be. I don’t know who these guys are as coaches, never played for them. I would think everybody’s preference, considering the roster, would be a “give the kid a chance” kind of coach.

ParticipantI actually think Fersch would be a good choice and pair him with Shaw. Then find another really good assistant coach to do the power play.
Also, think Nelson would be good but he may be a victim of his own success again if Hershey goes deep in AHL playoffs.
Cooper if he becomes available but I don’t think that will happen.
I don’t think Tocc nor Sullivan are good fits here. All of this is pretty much just my gut feeling talking here.
Let’s Go Flyers.

ParticipantI would really prefer the flyers go in a different direction than the consensus. Could we please hire Todd Nelson,Pat Ferschweiler, Mitch love or even just keep Brad Shaw. Tocchet has insanely low controlled zone entry numbers in both PHX and VAN. He is what fans accused torts of being. A dump and chase boring brand of hockey.i see the number of Clayton Keller skyrocket after tocchet leaves. the Peterson collapse coincidentally coincided with tocchet saying we want him to play differently. You even see vets struggle look at Oliver ekman-Larrson. He was terrible under tocchet. He goes to Florida and now Toronto and he’s a pretty solid D man. I watch way too much hockey and work til 1:30am so I see a lot of west coast games. Vancouver rode demko last year into a great year. That’s the extent of tocchets success in this league. I’d rather have anyone but him. “New era of orange” was what we been told. Michkov over Leonard gave me hope we were actually different. Tocchet brought in would be signal that. No they’re still the same

ParticipantWhy would it be hard to believe an incoming coach wouldn’t want to keep Shaw as part of the staff? I would want Shaw to stay on if the new coach decides through their own process that he deserves to be a part of his staff. Could be wrong but don’t see a new coach decision in the near future unless a Cooper becomes available.
-

ParticipantBecause Shaw is part of the same stink. time to move on. He is not anything special by any means. What has he really done during his Flyers tenure. I prefer the new coach to not be told he needs to keep Shaw or anyone else. Let him fail/succeed with his own choices.
Does Briere even have the final say in who becomes the coach I wonder.

ParticipantThat was my point in saying if the new coach decides to go through an interview process with Shaw instead of going with preconceived choices from lets say their coaching tree I would be fine with that decision. I agree I wouldn’t want a coach to be forced to keep anyone from the old staff for the sake of it. The triumvirate is gone so now it is a duo so possible Briere and Jonesy have to agree on the next coach and his staff, also very possible it is 100% Brieres decision. Not sure why that is hard to believe as a possibility.

ParticipantOff the top of my head, I think Bylsma was the AHL coach and Berube was an asst but took over mid-season, which tends to light a fire. Over the course of the offseason, it’s harder, I imagine. Guys will get it in their heads that training camp will become easier and it’s downhill from there. TBH if it’s Shawsy, I hope he still does the rope test and tries to catch guys off guard.’
edit: Berube was also the AHL coach before StL promoted him

ParticipantEven though it’s becoming a pipedream, I think Carle is my top choice. I think the Flyers actually present one of the best opportunities for him to make the jump into the NHL. It serves as a great opportunity for a young coach with a young family to inherit a young team, but a close-knit and disciplined locker room. The Flyers could offer him 5 years and guarantee him at least 3, unless something cataclysmic happens. The travel is fantastic and the region is great for a young family, I think it’d be the ideal jump for him, better than most other teams (NYR, PIT the superstars are older than him, CHI supposedly lacks internal structure, ANA might be too young, etc).
But, with it increasingly likely he returns to college, I’m pretty cold on the other options. Shaw sounds good but will the guys play for him? Tocchet I’ve just not been sold on as a great coach. He won Cups as an assistant with great teams, and a Jack Adams with a great team. Fersch I’m not really sold on, and I’ve heard some things about him from guys who’ve done dev camps with that he may not be as driven and focused as we’d like. Quennville is a hard no IMO, too old, and too much of a PR distraction. I would have loved Sullivan but that’s gone.
Can we tamper with Brind’Amour?

ParticipantWith the somewhat recent rumor Tocchet may opt to go back to TV for the upcoming season, it actually makes the most sense for him. He is now 61 and at the moment, the remaining job openings are for teams who are at best fringe wildcard teams. I’m not a big fan of any of Torts assistants surviving when the new HC is hired.

ParticipantI also question the need for Dillabaugh to be retained this long. Being in the same organization for over a decade, usually means that coach has shown a performance way above the league average with their responsibilities. No doubt Dilly has a wealth of goalie knowledge, but in regards to his peers certainly there is a huge question that he is not anywhere close to being above average.

This may be true. This team is still far enough away that there is a good chance that whoever gets the job now will just be setting up the next coach in line to reap the benefits. The team may be selling that they are ready to take the next step, and they may even believe that. The problem is most people outside the organization probably don’t see it that way.

don’t understand where tocchet gets all this hype. he has done absolutely nothing in 9 years as a head coach. why would a “winning” team want him?
him turning the flyers down would be 100% fn hilarious as what a bad look for the GS.
I wonder if they are looking at an assistant on a current playoff team. Maybe Bill can shed some light. otherwise seems a long time to not have a coach in place at his time. Wonder if there is a domino effect waiting to happen once one goes the other will follow.

Says Jay Woodcroft, Brad Shaw, Jay McKee were all interviewed.
With the exception of Lappy and Shaw, no coach is taking this job without reassurances they will upgrade the goaltending. Otherwise setting up for failure. Is there a more overrated coach than Tocchet? What has he accomplished? If he is hired the flyers will be strutting around like peacocks thinking they outsmarted everyone once again. Sadly this was likely the flyers plan from day 1 hiring Tocchet. What an original, boring, predictable, and path of least resistance hire/plan. Cant wait to e that smile on “jonesy” face when announced. Has any team wasted as much money on coaching the last 5 years with zero results?

ParticipantIf/when Tocchet gets hired, does he keep Shaw? Seems like VAN’s blueline was pretty effective without Shaw. Wonder if they sign Pius Suter as a stop gap center in free agency. Might be easier to sign him to a multi year deal, then Cates who looks like he wants to wait a year before signing multi term. My expectation is they trade for a goalie over trying to sign a UFA and hope for a good season.

Unless the team is ravaged by injuries to key players, I do not expect them to be worse then the Torts years. The ability to climb in the standings is certainly a question. Briere cannot just rely on the prospect pool to improve the roster and the UFA market really for years has not given great options. Hockey trades will have to happen.
