It would depend on how much Utah value him.

ParticipantStamkos 8×4 after a 40 goal season at age 34
then has 27-26-53
have to think a similar decline for JT is coming very soon and pay accordinglyJune 24, 2025 at 3:03 pm #11374Lawsie
Participantalso I could see him getting UFA offers like 7 or 8m x 4 or 5 years ~ Sensie
Oh ya ..he could walk like Stamkos if he prioritizes gettin’ paid.

if JT was getting money from another contract, the leafs and JT would still be “wide apart”, thats how it works …Sensie
Truth. Are you saying that if JT is getting an allowance from his mom the Leafs won’t get a discount?!
Seriously though …..Duchene at 4.5M in Dallas gets to shove ~2.9M in his pocket every year. Leafs will have to go ~$6M x 4 for JT to do the same.
Also ..I’m sure Tree is pointing out Nelson is a year younger (and will age/skate better) then JT so that 7.5M comp needs to be viewed accordingly. Fine, you’re a year older so maybe 7.5M x 2 is the comp ..now stick 3 years on the end at $4M, $1M, and $1M …and now you get that down to $21M over 5 yrs. Maybe you have to bump it a bit to account for tax differences. My limits for JT would be something like …
5×4.6 (8,8,4,2,1)
4×5.5 (8,8,4,2)
3×6.3 (7.5,7.5,4)$6m over 4 years is the highest I would go…maybe 5 x 5….but I’d prefer 4 years max. Its the leafs, so they’ll have to do 5 years.
$7m per is simply too high….I feel the same with Marchand….$8m per would be a waste of Marner’s cap.
As I mentioned in the other blog…stack the D
“I think P Kane stays in Detroit, but he would be a great add.
Get some depth in the bottom 6…add Tanev, P Suter
Grab some 1 year contract peeps
Sign Ekblad
Keep Morgan (probably no choice) and load up on D
Sign P Kane, tanev, P suter, and 1 year deals, bring up cowan
On D have:
Ekblad and Carlo/Tanev?
Mccabe and Tanev/Carlo
Rielly and OEL
Benoit.
Shelter Rielly, boost his confidence and trade value.
Trade him next off season. This allows the team to rest Tanev and OEL more often and really stacks our D for once.”

3×6.3 (7.5,7.5,4)If he doesn’t like it so be it ….he did nothing significant in the playoffs and is declining. You can rent JT’s at the deadline without destroying your cap for years.
im the same, those numbers are fine, but wouldnt do something like 7mx3, just move on. stick to your numbers
also I could see him getting UFA offers like 7 or 8m x 4 or 5 years

ParticipantTavares is better than Bennett and Luustofucker and Lundell…who cares? If he’s making 9mil they’re fucked, if he’s making 7mil they’re fine, if he’s making 5 mil they’re doing well…still will lose in the first round, but hey!
