sure, but he certainly could have gotten more regardlessSure I guess. But its easier to make a deal when you are already pulling in $2.5- 3m per year without a contract.
Also, I dont believe Dallas has high taxes.
In JT’s situation, he has to agree to a deal thats competitive to what he could get on the open market while also making sure the structure doesnt get him into tax trouble again.
The leafs also have Marner and knies to deal with as well.So a little more complicated I guess.
Im sure the leafs will overpay whoever they sign in the 2 weeks
All in good time.June 24, 2025 at 12:54 pm #11337senstrolltwo
Participantif JT was getting money from another contract, the leafs and JT would still be “wide apart”, thats how it works

ParticipantI believe Duchene is also getting paid by Nashville for the next 4 years…another $2.5m per. So he’s gonna make about $7m per season in total.

Chris Johnston mentioned that the Leafs may pivot to Mikael Granlund, for example, if Tavares walks.CJ added the Leafs and Tavares are still “wide apart” on money. If the Leafs go long-term, that might help bridge the gap, but neither side is there yet. Both sides understand they’ll have to move, and with a week before July 1st, Tavares is still more likely to re-sign than not.
another problem is, if they dont sign Tavares… they could pivot to a worse player.
it always seems like other teams get an quick easy deal done… 80 point player Duchene signs for a ham sandwich and bottle of rum, Leafs and JT are far apart .. same ol stuff

ParticipantWHAT!!
The Rangers will send the 12th overall pick to Pittsburgh to complete the JT miller.
The pens now select 11th and 12th. Not bad.Guess the rangers want the ability to use their 2026 first rounder in trade this upcoming season.
According to a TSN article.

Laughton is NOT dog poop.
Only Leafs haters and Flyers fans would say that. He’s a meh 4th liner, definitely not worth the 1st and B prospect the leafs gave up for him.
Horrible trade.

While Marchand went for a conditional 2nd round pick.Yes, but Marchand said he was only going to one team…so that impacts what the bruins got back for him.

If they don’t trade Marner’s rights are you going to be mad when they say “they tried” as you requested here? Also, for the record, Marchment has a 10 team no trade list. How do you know the leafs weren’t on it?
In addition, considering how many people talk about Marchment as the prototypical “power forward” the leafs need (which any team would need) he went for a paltry trade of mid picks. Let’s not overblow this guy’s abilities.I hope we hear of the Knies and JT signings soon though!
Dallas had to dump salary, they werent getting full value for him in a trade….so it impacted what they got.

He was ONLY going to the Panthers. The Bruins were not in the driver seat on this deal.
