After a disappointing season, the Canucks are a team that faces more uncertainty than most others. This is especially true when you consider the team that advanced to the WCSF against the Oilers a little over a year ago has traded away star centre JT Miller and has seen their other star centre Elias Petterson become a shadow of his former self. As we look towards the 2025-2026 season the team looks starkly different than it did a year ago.

We’ll begin in the crease, where Demko seems to have returned from injury which is a huge plus. Having Lankinen as a backup who is more than capable of carrying the load solidifies the crease, which was a major question mark entering last season. The defence is also much further ahead than it was last year, led by development and a couple of trades made in season. This upcoming season’s defence core has the depth to become one of the Canucks best ever, especially if continued development by Willander, Mancini and (D) Elias Petterson. There is still concern that this group is undersized, but they also have a legit superstar in Quinn Hughes who is inarguably one of the best defensemen and players in the game.

There is more concern up front as the team needs to replace the scoring of Miller, Boeser, and Suter if the latter 2 remain unsigned. There is some depth from the minors that can be called upon, particularly Artu Raty. However, there are concerns with how Jonathan Lekkerimaki will handle the heavier NHL game full time…..especially when it matters. There are other players in the minors that should be ready to compete part time next season, but the forward group needs an injection of both talent and attitude. That much is undeniable, although there is considerable cap space available to help shore that up.

The real question is what to do at the draft? It’s largely considered a weaker class although there are certainly some excellent prospects. Trading up could be an option, as could trading away the pick entirely. The truth is, we need a player or two that can help convince Quinn Hughes decide to stay in Vancouver regardless of how they’re acquired. Barring that, trading the ultra talented defender is likely the best move.

I told you we love you brother and you submitted a solid post. I personally am concerned that the team may take another step back, and it’s a valid concern. But I also see a talented core that could be the foundation of something to build upon. Boeser at an 8 cap hit isn’t going the answer, and that has me wondering where and who can be the supporting cast to help the offence move forward. And then there is a new 1st time coach and how all that plays out. Interesting season ahead and I can only hope for the best.

    Good points Mr. Golfing.
I am of the belief that Lankinen may be another player that Canucks sign to a big contract, although in previous viewings of him on previous teams he did look decent enough.

I am seriously interested in what it would take to trade up for Desnoyers. He lacks some explosiveness but he’s excellent on his own side of the red line.

I think next year’s first might do it, which I would do.

I haven’t been following the draft like some of you guys, but Desnoyers is projected to go at 5th, that would entail a trade with Nashville for a prospect and 15th. What are the thoughts on Malcolm Spence, bleacher report has him at 15?

I have several players in mind for the 1st, but honestly will just be happy if they make a selection with it.
Hopefully some big changes coming up

What now? Well, significant changes need to be made throughout the lineup if they are going to move forward and be competitive in the years to come. Demko needs to be traded. The defense is actually looking just ok, but you can’t now sacrifice what you’ve built on defense to strengthen the forward group because that’s a net sum zero move. Given the Canucks history they’ll flail around trying to get that 8th playoff spot and never really amount to anything.

In hindsight, trading the 1st for Marcus Pettersson now seems foolish, in my opinion.

Hey guys. Good post Golfing. I’m thinking it’ll take one of our better D prospects and our first to move up. Crazy how quickly the gaping hole up the middle appeared in the lineup. I’m sorta luke warm on Desnoyers but you’ve seen him more, my choice would be McQueen.

I’m not sure they’re gonna keep the pick, but if they do, I’d like them to take a center who’s over six feet tall, can skate, and can pass the puck. They have to strengthen the center ice position within the organization.

Agreed. As Load Management says McQueen would be great, if he somehow was available, but Jack Nesbitt is another player they need to consider.

Good job Golfing! Have you ever thought about writing Canucks blogs? 😉

That pick is as good as gone IMO.

I haven’t seen him much but I do think Spence looks more like a 3rd line winger because his scoring upside is limited. I like his north/south style but I’d rather go in another direction at 15. Brady Martin is a late riser that I find intriguing, and he plays centre.

I’m considering it lol. I agree that it’s highly doubtful we make the pick at 15.
