ParticipantYeah I can buy that too in which we’d be a little boned in the upcoming season.
I mean, JT isn’t getting 11. Marner isn’t getting 11+. Outside of moving Rielly, the D is pretty well locked for the season. Goalies are locked in. Lots of cap to tinker.
Personally, I believe it takes tinkering. After seeing the Panthers win the cup with like 9 million over the cap and the leafs gave them seemingly the biggest hurdle, tells me the leafs are closer than we think.
Aaron
ParticipantToews to the Jets is fitting. Good for him if he can play, even a minor role!
As for Marchy, I don’t think he signs in Toronto. Guy has 2 cups so he either Corey Perry’s this bitch and tries for a 3rd and signs cheapo. Or he heads to Utah or somewhere else willing to pay him 8 million over 3 or 4 years. Even 1 year at that is too much.

ParticipantNot sold on McMann. Should be traded for assets. The Marner money should get you two top 6 wingers. Boeser and Ehlers?
I am going to be positive here in that let’s think about what “far apart” means. I haven’t checked any articles about it or sources to know more details so I am speculating but can it not mean Knies wants a shorter term and leafs want longer? It doesn’t HAVE to be dollar amounts and it’ll be an overpay. It could be maybe the leafs want to give him 5 and he wants 8 or 9. I don’t necessarily believe that 8 x 8 would be a 1 or 2 mil overpay. I think we need to look at the contracts this year with the cap going up in the future in mind. We just gotta hope we don’t have another pandemic to stall it all out again

Man I’m not trying to dog on you dude because your McMann take is good but I’m just unsure with a cap going up, players in their prime and combined making 13ish million they are taking the same money OR a pay cut to come to Toronto?

ParticipantAs usual, the Leafs are late to the last supper. Instead of being proactive, they go to an early summer vacation. They better be trying to get something for Marner’s rights or they’re brain dead!
If they don’t trade Marner’s rights are you going to be mad when they say “they tried” as you requested here?
Also, for the record, Marchment has a 10 team no trade list. How do you know the leafs weren’t on it?
In addition, considering how many people talk about Marchment as the prototypical “power forward” the leafs need (which any team would need) he went for a paltry trade of mid picks. Let’s not overblow this guy’s abilities.I hope we hear of the Knies and JT signings soon though!
Aaron
ParticipantMarner and his mercenary attitude won’t be missed. He’s a manipulating little b!tch! Good riddance. Get players that want to win here. Tavares should not see more than $5M per season on a 2 year deal. Get a good 2C that is defensively sound.
In an ideal world I feel this would happen regarding JT. We aren’t in an ideal world and JT absolutely played as a 2C in the league last year. He’s slowing down but I feel with the cap opening up in the next few years I bet we see some longer contract for him. It also depends on what JT wants.
Ideally, for me, it’s similar to giroux. Something like 3 x 6 – 7. That’s what I think will happen.
Similarly, I wonder if Tree is trying to get Knies on a long term deal. I’d like to see 7 x 8 or even 8 x 8. However, if I were Knies and looking at the cap going up, I’d do like 4years x 6 million.

ParticipantCup has been handed out. Time to move on to the free agency and draft! Less than 10 days away from the draft!
Aaron
ParticipantAh ok, I see what you’re saying. Honestly, I havent any of the canes games and no idea how their play is structured and I havent heard too many peeps talk about them. However, I dont listen to a lot of talking heads outside of kyper and bourne and the Overdrive guys and anytime they discuss a non canadian team…I kinda just switch the channel. LOL
All I know, is the canes are rocking without Rant but they have Freddy in net…so at anytime….they could implode – Fake
lol so what you’re saying is the average view of how anyone listens to anything about Carolina. hahaha. They certainly aren’t a team anyone really talks about.
Aaron
ParticipantI think it’s a big factor that Matthews was battling injury all year, literally from training camp. It sometimes takes years for players to learn how to win. Sid didn’t win shit until he did. Ovi didn’t win shit until he did. MacKinnon didn’t win shit until he did. It’s a shame that Matthews was nowhere near 100%, because this really could have been the year that things finally clicked.- Whipper
I agree. It sucks he was injured how long he was injured for. I wish he sat for longer if need be. They didn’t NEED to win the division if it cost them a healthy Matthews.
Aaron
ParticipantNot sure carolina is built the right way….I havent heard anyone say that.
But the leafs template hasnt worked in 9 years. You need top end scoring, depth scoring, big quality D, good goaltending and a willingness to consistently fight for every inch of the ice. The leafs have improved big quality D (although they are older) and good goaltending. – FakesieThe talking heads and pundits who talk about them at all, cause let’s face it it’s Carolina and nobody gives a fuck, talk about how they run 4 lines, they are all hard working, north/south guys and they play an “even better” team defense than Florida does. On paper they should be a better shut down team than Florida.
Aaron
ParticipantI’ll add something additional. Considering Carolina and Florida both are “built the right way” and one of them has to lose this series like, you can build “tough” but it doesn’t matter because 31 teams a year lose. Colorado and the Blues and Kings all built the same way. Fuck the Oilers aren’t and they are in conference finals back to back years.
Aaron
ParticipantCush you make some good points.
I will say this. Management are the ones to look at this through objective eyes and make changes. I rely on them to not overreact/over correct as many fans want. I have seen many, many fans saying to rebuild it and move Matthews because “he’s shit”.
Like let’s try to be positive? Leafs have 9 consecutive years in the playoffs, including years they weren’t expected to make it. They also have shit the bed a bunch too.
Recently they’ve lost to the panthers 2 out of 3 years in the 2nd round. Florida is becoming a “dynasty” type team. It still sucks and you gotta beat the best but this is where I have to agree I don’t see the killer instinct. Leafs had plenty of chances, like the Canadian division to make a run and couldn’t muster that instinct.
As for Rielly, I wouldn’t be opposed if he decided to leave or stay. Doesn’t matter to me. JT can come back. He’s been an effective 2nd liner, just needs a cheap contract. Marner I think he explores the free agency but who really will pay him 14 million?
Aaron
ParticipantMorgan Rielly is going to be wearing a Leaf sweater for three more years, and the sooner we all accept that the better off we’ll be. Whipper
If he chooses to go it wouldn’t be for spare parts. He still would get a reasonable return. He’s an “offensive” dman with 3 years signed for fair value. A team out there would take him as a way to hope he pushes them to the playoffs.
The biggest part of the panthers success is that their bottom 6 contributes on the scoresheet…..the leafs bottom 6 really dont that much. – Fakey
For whatever reason all the depth scoring dried up beyond round 1 pretty much. However, I thought Tree was “masterful” in changing this part of the roster? ( You didn’t say that. I am just stating how others believe it was the best)
My opinion is it’s shuffling deck chairs and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.
Anyway, same as all the other times. I rather have the last 9 years than the previous 9 years of futility before it. Playoffs are way more fun than being bottom feeders.
Aaron
ParticipantIt’s probably career suicide but if I was Marner I would take a 1 year deal with the leafs for the same money. Show the leaf fans you can play ball and not demand the most money. It will probably help his mental struggles as well.
Then next year be better in the playoffs and take your big contract. It might help the future ticket if he can perform well. – Bryant
I dont think it’s career suicide. Guy put up a 100 points. If he gets close to it again then I am sure there’s a team out there willing to pay him a fortune for that kind of production. There’s a lot of teams who would trade for the leafs season this year… some owners definitely want those playoff gates. So I agree! Marner for 10 million. 1 year.
Aaron
ParticipantMarner must stay. You can’t lose your leading scorer for nothing. There is nobody available to replace him that will actually sign here for less money and more impact
Well no. He isn’t a “must” stay. Reason? He doesn’t have a contract and doesn’t have to be signed. Leafs will suit up a roster and win some games regardless if Marner is on that roster.
