Anyone else kind of hoping that they just continue to be so bad that they decide to sell at the deadline and rebuild.

If there was any decent offer for Matthews at this point, I would take it. Rielly, Tanev, OEL, Carlo might all fetch a decent pick at the deadline. You could even take back short term salary. I would even consider trading Nylander.

I don’t believe their highest paid players are ever going to become guys who care enough to win.

LOL I started typing this when it was 1-0

Can’t they get rid of Rielly for like, anything?

Meh… Rielly and Knies then for Hughes and a pick, any pick, 7th round pick, protected at a top 30 finish. 👍

I don’t think that does it. The only reason it might is that clearly Vancouver knows Hughes wants to go to NJ… but then that is a problem for the Leafs also, and now you have given up probably the 2nd best player on the team.

I wish they could get Hughes. one of the top 2 dmen in the league is just about as valuable as an elite 1st line center, which the Leafs also no longer have.

    Ouch.

I have felt for at least 5 years that this “core” would never win anything. At this point, I want the teardown and rebuild to begin, so can’t say this is bugging me too much so far… Except it’s against the Habs, an effort would be nice.

I get what you’re saying but I won’t lie, I’m starting to become happy that he only signed for a 4 year deal. Injury or no, Matthews is not playing like he did prior to his current deal.

He’s no longer a top 10 player he’s drastically falling off, he’s more like a 20 – 30th ranked player, which is a big problem for the leafs. To suggest trading him for a kid who hasnt even played 30 games in the nhl is foolish. We’ve seen so many kids explode into to the league and fall right off or plateau. -Fakesies

Definitely not top 20. Probably 20-30 somewhere.

At some point people are going to have to admit that letting a 100 pt. guy, in his prime, walk for nothing was a huge mistake. There is a reason no other team in recent memory has done that.

<p style=”text-align: left !important; transition: all;” data-userway-s19-styled=”true” data-text-align-feature-value=”1″>Well said real CC, if they win a game sweet, if they lose that sucks but oh well, it’s just a game not the meaning of life lol

The older you get, the more you realize that it is nothing more than a hopefully entertaining diversion. I was more bummed out by the Jays losing than the Leafs last year and I am by no means an avid baseball fan.
I think it becomes easier to shrug it off when you don’t like the team much. I admired the Jays team and I felt like they got kinda got shafted by a brutal call on a fluke play.

I remember many years ago now actually enjoying the Leafs team because they had a new crop of young stars and you could see some hope. That iteration is already coming to an end and if it isn’t, it probably should be.

Hey Guys, Since my first attempt at the most idiotic post possible was such a resounding success, I wanted to see if I could follow it up with the second most stupid post possible.

How about if I were to blame the team’s net-minus on the two top scorers for only having the 2nd best, and 5th best +/- on the team. Is that too simple and too stupid? I don’t want to eclipse the stupidity from last night’s idiocy of blaming Tavares and Sundin.

Guys, help me out here. I am trying to craft the most ridiculous a-hole post I can imagine.

So far, the post is all about how Tavares’ defensive play is the reason the Leafs are losing, and so I am comparing him directly to that other Leafs loser, Mats Sundin.

How am I doing so far? Could I make up something more ridiculous.

I think it’s as simple as it gets; Shanahan wanted complete control and having Lou in the organization was a threat. If things went poorly, ownership would eventually remove Shanahan and promote Lou. Instead, Shanahan wanted a puppet GM and ownership, as ignorant as they ever have been about hockey, allowed it. Dubas was his pet. Treliving was hired to be the same until Shanahan got fired. And as we can see, Treliving is a glorified assistant GM who is running this team even further into the ground than Shanahan did. -Fakesies

The Leafs organization envisioned a league that was changing. They expected an evolution towards speed and skill, where a potent powerplay would keep rough/rugged play in check. Management in the new NHL would lean heavily on analytics as the new direction would remove a lot of the intangibles that traditionally were important for success, particularly in the playoffs. Dubas fit the vision. Lou did not.

What they got was a league that did not change in the slightest and a team with not nearly enough of the heart/grit/caresi required to win. Then they got F’d over by the stagnant cap which meant that their overpaid players didn’t become good deals as they aged. They were messed up by this worse than any other team.

They then proceeded to go down a dark hole of throwing away draft picks and prospects every year to pick up “grit” guys to hopefully bring that element to the team. They decimated their farm and their draft capital. The problem is when your top earners and “best” players are the ones who don’t have enough heart, then players brought in at the end of the season will change absolutely nothing.

Now, they simply have the “wrong” best players. They aren’t good enough. In fact, they are getting worse. Nylander is about the same as Kessel; good piece, not a leader. Matthews game gets worse every year. He is an average 2nd line center now paid like a top-5 player in the league. Rielly should have been gone before his last contract. Tanev is way past his prime and Tavares, as steady as he is, is just not enough to lead this team to any success. The rest of the players are just interchangeable, average NHLers.

I would seriously consider blowing it all up. I do not think this iteration of the team will ever win anything.

You have to admit, it is pretty funny to watch them fail so completely. 🙂
