Flyers’ rebuild timeline remains unclear as team reaches mediocrity

The Flyers now have several players locked into long-term, no-trade contracts through at least the 2030 season, including forwards Travis Konecny, captain Sean Couturier, Christian Dvorak, Owen Tippett, and defenseman Travis Sanheim. They also have defenseman Cam York locked up until the 2030 season; however, he does not have a no-trade clause in his contract, according to Puckpedia.com, nor does center Noah Cates, who is signed until the 2029 season.

The Flyers have seven roster spots locked up long-term. Along with this, the Flyers are likely to re-sign newly acquired center/wing hybrid Trevor Zegras, who is currently leading the Flyers in points, to a long-term deal. Matvei Michkov is also another untouchable, according to the Flyers, so he can be penciled into the future long-term as well. Along with Michkov, forward Tyson Foerster (24) is another player that the Flyers are not looking to move on from any time soon.

Even if the Flyers wanted to take a step back it’s to late. With the number of existing long-term contracts and impending long-term contracts, half the team is locked up or will be locked up through 2030. Anyone with trade value has a long term contract, most with no trade clauses. Ristolainen will finish his career in the most Risto and Flyer way possible. As a Flyer defenseman on LTIR.

Other than Martone coming up this is probably your team for the next 3-5 years. Maybe he can be a franchise center because Dvo sure as hell isn’t it.

ever notice how JJ and Doucher are not very complimentary towards MM unlike last year. What has changed?

only a fn idiot head coach would move MM from right to left wing. All to accommodate brink and tippet. The fact briere seems to be on board with the head coach is telling.

John Tortorella’s Role for the Flyers Only Intensifies After His Press Box Visit

Tortorella was not present behind the bench and it was later revealed that he was sitting side-by-side with Daniel Brière. The Flyers got heavily outplayed, the likes that we haven’t seen a Tortorella-led team play in recent weeks, but somehow managed an overtime point.
The same thing happened the following game against Buffalo but with Brière traveling elsewhere, Tortorella watched from the locker room instead. He did make his return behind the bench in their last game against Pittsburgh.

Remember 2023 when DB let Torts play GM, and let someone else coach the team, the job he was paid to do? What competent team let’s their coach spend the game in the locker room instead of coaching the team? I have not heard of any other team, other than this DB led team, letting their healthy coach, do this.

The stupid shit this team has done under DB and Torts was legion including Torts essentially quitting while DB whined about wanting him to come back but not being able to bring him back. I feel that Tocch has the same free reign Torts had.

There was zero need for Noah Juulsen to fight Jack McBain midway through the third period. Actually, it wasn’t so much the fight itself. It was the initial roughing penalty to preceded the fight. Yes, Juulsen was defending Drysdale. However, midway through the third period of a two-goal game is not the time to leave your team shorthanded.
The Juulsen penalty was a must-kill. It wasn’t. Guenther’s power play tally gave Utah life. Before that, the third period was under control. Now Philly was in hang-in mode. They still should have won, 5-3.

The Flyers and their old time hockey mentality.

The lineup decisions were crap as well. Whether you might win an extra game or two in Jan. of a throwaway year is irrelevant. Play Zegras exclusively at center because that’s where you need to know if he can play long term and Michkov at RW because that’s where he needs to be long term. If Brink has to play his off wing than so be it. One of those is face of the future for the franchise and he’s basically been told to eat crap and smile all year from the coach.

I hate the Michkov narrative this FO/coach keeps putting out. I am not as concerned about his point production as his usage and TOI. Let the kid learn from his mistakes and stop trying to put a round peg in a square hole. The issues with Michkov are overblown by the coach. One might say Tocch has a bug up his posterior regarding Michkov. His underlying metrics are some of the best on the team.

You ever get the feeling that the Flyers would rather build around Hathaway (who plays the right way) instead of Michkov?

    Interesting tidbit on Risto.

Ristolainen, who is listed on Matt Larkin’s trade board and whom I wrote about several times recently, is still not being shopped, even when healthy, a source reiterated to me. His absence in recent games has once again shown the team his importance on their second and third pair, according to team sources. By the sounds of it, Ristolainen will really need to be pulled out of Philadelphia with a big offer more than ever.

It seems like the Flyers are rider or die with him. It’s hard to see what his impact is when he’s only played 13 games this year and is currently injured again and has missed 100+ games over the last 3 years. I struggle to see what his value is to teams from the hot tub. It’s certainly not for his vast playoff experience.

Gave up 7 PP and Ersson with the his 1st game with an above .900 this year and only his 2nd since Dec 3.

2nd best PP% meets the 20th PK% with the 20th PK scoring the SH GWG.

Flyers did win over half of their face offs after only winning 35% the other day.

Despite the win they were still bad in most facets of the game. They were out chanced and outplayed most of the game at 5-5 and the lack of talent showed.

They aren’t going to win many games giving up 7pp and trying to win a 1 goal game.

Even Chris Pronger gives the “rebuild” (air quotes) a big thumbs down. Seriously, I don’t know anyone defends this front office. The voices supporting them are coming down to a few employees and stockholm syndrome fans.

Wheeler states, “Porter Martone’s awesome, Matvei (Michkov)‘s still going to be awesome, they’ve used two top-12 picks on two kids who might top out as third-line centers for them.”
    ..
If you think the Flyers need a superstar center and defenseman, then you’ve probably been panicking for a while now. The truth is, there isn’t a reasonable path for the team to acquire both of these pieces. They could get lucky and draft one in 2026, but getting the other won’t be easy.

    ——————

And Scott Wheeler. Everyone thinks he tops out at 3rd line center, now, when apparently it’s safe to not toe the company line. It’s just ridiculous that everyone had to lie to the public for over 2+ years even though every evaluation of him all along pointed to this probable outcome.

Not that anybody cares about the Flyers anymore other than a few die hards. And they don’t understand why the Flyers keep falling further and further behind the other sports in Philly.
