I don’t view any of these trades as mistakes but I do have a few questions about why more value wasn’t returned? For starters, Nick Robertson was a proven 15 goal scorer with obvious upside. Since when has a player like that only been worth a 5th round pick?
As for receiving Emil Andrae, a 3rd round pick and an eventual 5th for Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit, I simply did not understand that deal. I still don’t understand why they targeted Andrae?
The jury is still out on the Kirill Marchenko for Matthew Knies deal.After a good start to his AHL season I thought the Leafs had struck gold signing Borya Valis. As it turned out he cooled off and looked quite ordinary for most of the remainder of the season and into the Calder Cup playoffs.
This upcoming season the competition among right shooting right wingers will be much stiffer. Valis will be competing with the likes of Brandon Buhr, Miroslav Holinka, Ryan Tverberg and veteran Vinni Lettieri for playing time on the right flank. Granted, Holinka may be slotted in at center from the get go.
It is my hope that one of Valis or Buhr emerge as a right shooting power forward at the NHL level.
