ParticipantI won’t miss him.
Because you like it when the Leafs lose.
In regards to the out of context photo, you’re right, Marner should have been the 3rd man in and taken a penalty. That’s what a really smart, all-time great player would have done. He’s such a moron.
Or better yet, he should have chased Point into the locker room and punched him while the medical staff was treating his injury after Rielly threw him into the boards. If he had done that, the Leafs would have at least 5 Cups in a row by now.
3rd man in? Look who was on the ice at the time. Kucherov, Point and Stamkos. So Mitch couldn’t handle those bruisers? He probably needed his Depends changed, with the thought of having to fight someone that was the same size as he was. I also remember this year, when Matthew Tkachuk was chasing him around, late in the game, slashing at him. He should have poll axed him across the ankles and that nonsense would have stopped immediately. He just didn’t have the stomach to do what needed to be done. Somewhere, I read that UG/AA mentioned that Marner was a lot like Gilmour in his prime. What a joke! There’s a reason that they called Gilmour “Killer”. That look of intensity and willingness to stick an opponent when necessary is part of what made Gilmour a bonafide star. Marner was never that and never will be that.

ParticipantTreliving is going to destroy this team the same way he left Calgary in shambles.
Start preparing your draft rankings for 2028 (if the Leafs don’t trade that pick too) because the next rebuild is around the corner. This team is just starting to circle the drain.
Are you back from purgatory? Wife must have leashed you, but gave you a hero cookie to behave, while she lay on her sofa and you rubbed her feet.
Anyway, I figure the Leafs have a 2 year window to get the job done. After that, it’ll be a retooling time. If they can’t get assets for Matthews and or Nylander, once they hit their 30’s, it’ll be a fire sale to recoup young assets, something like Boston is currently doing. The only outlier is if McDavid hits free agency and they flip either Matthews or Nylander to free up cap space and build around McDavid. I give that about a 5% chance of happening. The stupidity of the league to not broach the taxation issues, in the new Collective bargaining agreement was a major faux pa. The League is too fixated at trying to make the southern cities acceptable for hockey. They’ll do an expansion and allow the two deep south entrants to get competitive quickly and screw teams like Buffalo and Columbus that can’t get or keep good young players. Bettman and his owner buddies are ruining this great sport.

ParticipantA “snappy comeback” is lost on you. It’s unnecessary. You are what you are: a sheep.
OK AA. I’ve been around the old site since the early days. I’ve dealt with the real Unholy Goalie and you aren’t him. The real UG had a hate on for Leafs management, forever. He always snapped at others who disagreed. I’ve actually had civil conversations with him via PM. All you are is a changeling looking to cause dissention on this new site. Pretty much everyone gets along here, except you. I know your handy-work from the Buzz. So lets talk Marner.
I’ve seen him play in London and he was a terrific player. His skating is amazing and so is his hands. All well and good, when playing in the regular season, when you might see a team and play 2, 3 or 4 times in an 82 game schedule. Teams don’t go out of their way in the regular season to diminish opposing player’s talent on the ice. However, once the playoffs start, tactics change. Small players are at a disadvantage. The jungle becomes thicker and it’s hard to penetrate the slot area with consistency. Marner disappears, every year, when the tough get going. I only have to refer to his lazy backcheck on Pasternak, in Overtime in game 7. He didn’t skate hard enough and gave up on the play. That was his man and he let him go on the outside. Leafs lost a series because of him, but I’ve never seen you mention that in your idolization of Mitch Marner. He shrinks when the going gets tough. When you look at him, he was supposed to be one of the top 3 players on the Leafs. He could never elevate his game, when the team needed him most. Hence his record in elimination games. And before you start droning about Matthews, at least he wins faceoffs and works in the corners to dig out pucks. It was Mitch’s job to get him the puck in tight area’s and he failed miserably. Can Matthews play better? We’ll find out next year, once he’s healthy and has proper line-mates during the playoffs. Mitch deserves every criticism that he gets, since he twice decided to become a mercenary and went for top dollar, when he’s only a winger, not a center, and finally had his first 100 point season in 9 years. I wouldn’t call that Hall of Fame numbers up until now. The floor is yours, so flame on.

ParticipantSomething else that’s important is culture. Boston’s culture led to guys taking less to remain competitive. You’re seeing that in Florida now. You saw it in Tampa as well. Maybe Tavares’ latest contract can start something here, but I think as long as Matthews continues to seek ego-satisfying numbers, nothing will change here.
What’s sickening is the NHL under Bettman doesn’t address this issue. They want a salary cap, but still give teams in the south an advantage. Knowing how much that the Leafs contribute in revenue sharing, it’s a slap in the face to the fanbase who gives money to franchises that continues to have an advantage, thanks to the tax issues. Bettman is a clown and needs to go!

ParticipantThe leafs already have those two named Kampf and Jarnkrok, problem is they don’t score.
The leafs need 40P guys for the bottom end and 4-5 PK forwards, not 6-7.
Yes, whoever has the most average / below average players wins the Cup.
You miss the point about cap hit. If Leafs had paid $14M for Marner, there was no place for improvement elsewhere. 9 years of this kind of participation is enough to make a move. Marner was the only one of the young core that didn’t have a contract….hence, he was expendable.

ParticipantLeafs have their 4 centers. It’s in the top 6 on the wing that they require an upgrade.

ParticipantI was hoping for a nice 1st line winger with size to play besides Matthews and Knies. A Legion of Doom clone. 3 guys with size driving to the net and working the corners. Not sure where Treliving will find one. The second line needs one as well. I’m not overly worried about the bottom 6. Rielly is the wild card on defense.

ParticipantLeafs need to target Boeser, to replace the Marner offense. Also move on from Kampf, Robertson & McMann.

In fact, the additional income allows the Leafs to support other teams, including the ones offering players the huge tax break. Even if it is only 43 games worth it is still significant.
<p data-userway-s3-2-styled=”true” style=”background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; transition: all; border-color: rgb(255, 255, 255) !important; color: rgb(80, 208, 160) !important;”>Huh? How are the leafs supporting other teams? The leafs can’t hand opposition teams money openly, unless there are acceptable payouts from tv contracts etc? (Sincere question there)
Equalization payments. Should be only for a 3 year period and if you can’t make it in the league, lose your franchise.
PrinceLH
ParticipantNice contract with Knies
Yes, Knies AAV is $7.75 X 6 years. Sounds reasonable at this point.
