The Utah Mammoth hoped to open the 2026-27 season in a strong way, and they did. The Mammoth stomped all over the Chicago Blackhawks in a 6-0 win to begin the season.
Utah started dominating the Blackhawks almost immediately. The Blackhawks did manage to keep the home team off the board for most of the first period. That was until Dylan Guenther scored Utah’s first goal of the season on a power play for the third straight season.
Utah didn’t waste any time to keep it going. Just a minute later, winger Michael Carcone made it 2-0. In the second period, the Mammoth still didn’t let up. Center Nick Schmaltz, who scored 33 goals last season, scored a goal that made it 3-0.

Then, Anders Lee tipped in a shot from defenseman Andrew Peeke to make it 4-0. Utah started to squash the Blackhawks into the ice at that point. On another power play, Guenther made it 5-0 on a beautiful pass from winger Clayton Keller. Young winger Daniil But scored a goal to make it 6-0. Starting goalie Karel Vejmelka saved all 15 shots faced to earn the shutout.
Utah did a good job keeping the puck away from the Blackhawks and winning faceoffs. The Mammoth more than doubled Chicago in shots (32-15) on goal and won 72.2% of the faceoffs. Utah also compiled 42 hits, to the Blackhawks 12. For a team looking to build off of their first playoff appearance last season, they’re off to a great start.
Head coach Andre Tourigny could hardly have dreamed of a better start to the season for the Mammoth. Utah is now 1-0-0 and will visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, looking to continue its very hot start. They have their sights on another chance at a playoff run.
