Mikael Backlund Extended, Camp Rosters Announced

It’s a busy day in Flames land, so let’s get to it.

Going the Distance

The Calgary Flames announced that captain Mikael Backlund has been extended an additional two years beyond his current contract which expires on July 1, 2026.

The deal pays out $6,500,000 and carries an annual average value of $3,250,000. Per Puckpedia, the contract includes a full No Movement Clause through December 31, 2027, then converts to a 10-Team No Trade Clause starting on January 1, 2028.

The 36 year old center affirmed that, while chasing a cup would be great, it simply means for more for him to do it with the Calgary Flames. Admirable.

At 1,066 games played, Backlund has the opportunity to pass Jarome Iginla for the franchise record of most games played. The Hall of Fame winger suited up for 1,219 regular season games for Calgary.

It will be important for Backlund to find a way to stay healthy. The six-foot tall product of Vasteras, Sweden played through an assortment of maladies last season. Simply “playing through” ultimately hindered the team’s results over the 76 games that he dressed for.

Backlund served as a key member of both the power play and penalty kill—the former may need to be limited. Mikael played a total of 135:45 of time with the man advantage last season and recorded only six points over that span.

The speedy Swede recorded 15 goals and 17 assists for 32 points in 76 games in 2024-25. He finished the year with four goals and three assists for seven points in his final five games.

Camp Roster Announced

The Flames announced their camp rosters today. Take a look.

We have the traditional three team setup. Red and Yellow have a solid mix of veterans and younger players. Team Black is the classic “not in the picture” group.

Note that Devin Cooley and Ivan Prosvetov will suit up with different groups. The two will battle it out for the right to backup Dustin Wolf on the big team.

Five skaters and one goalie from rookie camp will get reps in camp. Mace’o Phillips, Andrew Basha, Matvei Gridin, Aydar Suniev and Owen Say.

    Thanks Trevor!

Re-upping backs makes sense. He has done everything the team asked and more.

Also makes sense if hey are thinking of moving Kadri.

What would it take to get Mason McTavish?

Do the Flames have the worst C core in the league?

It was a loooooooooooooooooooooong offseason. Glad hockey is back!

That’s great news! Mikael Backlund’s extension is a solid move — his leadership and two-way play have always been key assets for the team. Announcing the camp rosters alongside this update really builds excitement for the upcoming season. It’ll be interesting to see how the younger players fit in and what lineup combinations the coaching staff experiments with.

At Khalique Sons International, we understand the importance of teamwork and precision — the same qualities that make Backlund such a reliable player. As trusted Horse Sheets Manufacturer, we know success comes from consistency, dedication, and passion — values clearly shared by the Flames organization.
