The Edmonton Oilers could be a landing spot for Artemi Panarin, according to hockey insider Dave Pagnotta.
On Monday, Pagnotta was asked about the Panarin trade situation. He says that Panarin wants a chance at the Stanley Cup. However, he also wants an extension. Over the weekend, Pagnotta says he was starting to hear that a rental option might work. If an extension is not possible with certain trade options, Panarin would consider being a rental. He will only do this for top-tier teams.
“I don’t want to freak anybody out here. I do believe that if there is an opportunity to chase a Stanley Cup as a pure rental, if no other options present themselves,” said Pagnotta. He lists the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, and Edmonton as the teams that Panarin would consider accepting a deal to as a rental to chase after the cup.
Oilers are a Rental Option for Panarin
The primary goal for Panarin is to win a championship. Teams that can also include an extension, would be a better option for him. As for the Colorado, Dallas, and Edmonton, they can’t offer that.
Teams that remain in the mix are the Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, and Florida Panthers. Pagnotta is labeling teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals as unlikely. Brock Nelson’s trade from the New York Islanders to the Avalanche is a comparable for Panarin. That deal included a first and third round pick, plus top prospect Cal Ritchie and Oliver Kylington.
The New York Rangers would need to retain 50% of Panarin’s $11.6 million cap hit if he’s going to a cup contender. For the Oilers, they will need to include a few contracts from their roster heading back the other way for the deal to work. Edmonton would likely offer something like a 2026 third-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick, Andrew Mangiapane ($3.6 million), Mattias Janmark ($1.45 million), and prospect Issac Howard.
