Training camp is very different in 2025
The Detroit Red Wings have finished the first day of training camp, and there are several updates. The most impactful is definitely the addition of daily scrimmages in lieu of excessive drills. The hope is that players will be much more prepared for preseason competition.
The end of camp usually coincides with a Red and White game, which will be played in Grand Rapids this year. With the additional scrimmages, players are using competitive play to “shake off the rust” of the summer. So far, players and coaches seem to to appreciate the changes.
Marco Kasper’s line is the most complete on the team
Last season, the line centered by Marco Kasper was easily the best in Detroit. Patrick Kane and Alex Debrincat meshed well with the young centerman. So far, it appears that that group will remain in tact. Going into the season with that group working so well is a big advantage over last year.
When asked about the line, Dylan Larkin replied, “there are no holes”. It’s clear that Kasper, Kane and Debrincat are thriving in all three zones on the ice. Larkin’s response also pointed out a painfully obvious fact. There is no solidified left wing for Detroit’s captain as of yet.
Larkin’s line has an “open spot” being auditioned for
Coach Todd McLellan made it clear that there is no clear candidate yet for Larkin’s left side. Lucas Raymond will continue to flank the right side as he looks to add to his offensive output. The two combined for nearly 60 goals, but need to find a steady line mate.
James Van Riemsdyk is currently absent from camp, but is an early candidate. However, many feel that either Nate Danielson or Amadeus Lombardi would fill that role nicely. Filling that void is one of the most critical pieces to Detroit’s success in the upcoming season.
