We’ll take, “Expect the Unexpected for $500, Alex”.
Elliotte Friedman is reporting that a trade sending Flames defenceman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth is now awaiting player approval due to a No Movement Clause in MacKenzie’s contract.
With cosmic timing, Eric Francis dropped a bomb on the Calgary market on Wednesday morning when he landed a one-on-one chat with Weegar.
Well worth a read, but the jist is that Weegar would consider waiving his No Trade Clause—if he was asked to. He is now, apparently, is being asked to.
“When I first came here, obviously I wanted to be a part of a winning team,” pined the 32 year old defenceman.” Obviously times change. It’s been four years since then. But I love it, so I always want to elaborate on that part, because I do love it here. If something did occur, and Connie came up to me and asked, it would be a tough decision, for sure.”
We don’t want to steal any of Eric’s shine, so give the piece a read at your leisure. One major takeaway is that Weegar and his wife are a bit uncomfortable with the speculation.
Calgary’s highest paid defenceman, Weegar has five more years after this season on his contract at an annual average value of $6,250,000. His season has been a rough one. So many games have included a lethal turnover, despite the adversity, Weegar has held his head high and soldiered on through what is expected to be a lower body injury.
The Ottawa, Ontario product has three goals and 18 assists in 60 games this season and leads the NHL with a -25 plus/minus rating.
Stay tuned for details on a the return!
