The Toronto Maple Leafs once again followed their pattern of peaks and valleys that has cost them valuable points in the standings, falling behind early, rallying to within a goal before eventually falling to the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday. The Leafs trailed 3-0 after two periods, with Montreal getting great goaltending from rookie Jacob Fowler, and a pair of goals from Alex Newhook and a breakaway tally from Chris Kreider.
Toronto got on the board in the third with a power-play marker from William Nylander and the sixth of the season from Gavin McKenna, but after a Troy Stecher hooking call, Zach Bolduc’s one-timer on the man advantage beat Sergei Bobrovsky to ice the game away for the Habs, who have taken both games in the Leafs home barn. The injury news got worse for Toronto, as defenseman Morgan Rielly left the game in the second period and did not return.
Rielly leads all Leafs defensemen in even-strength points with 11, and his absence makes the already thin Toronto blueline even weaker. Head coach Jim Hiller did not have an update after the game, but the recall of defenseman Cole McWard from the AHL Marlies on Sunday morning is an indicator that the longest-tenured Leaf will not be available for Sunday night’s Hall of Fame game against the New Jersey Devils.

Dakota Mermis is expected to step into the lineup, and Anthony Stolarz will be playing in the second of back-to-back games. The Devils also played on Saturday, winning 5-4 in overtime against the Islanders, with backup Jake Allen in goal. The undefeated Connor Hellebuyck is likely to make the start for New Jersey (4-0-0, 2.44 GAA, .891 save %). John Tavares played 21:06 in his return to the lineup on Saturday, playing mostly the left side with Nick Paul and Nylander.
