Senators Lose A Heartbreaker In Double OT

Jordan Martinook scored with 13:53 into double overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators. The Hurricanes take a 2-0 series lead as the scene shifts to Ottawa Thursday.

For Martinook, it was a bit of redemption after being stopped by Senators goalie Linus Ullmark on a penalty shot in the first overtime period on what concluded a wild and strange sequence.

Hurricanes Mark Jankowski scored off a rebound on what was originally thought to be a delayed penalty call as Senators Warren Foegele hooked Martinook who was darting towards the net, appearing to give Carolina a victory. However, it was deemed Jordan Staal didn’t have full control of the puck while crossing the blue line resulting in an offside.

But that wasn’t where the play ended. Instead of a hooking call on Foegele, officials awarded a penalty shot to Martinook.

NHL Rule 38.7 states if an infraction occurs even if a play is successfully challenged for offside, the penalty or in this case, a penalty shot is still awarded.

Game Thoughts

Linus Ullmark stands tall

Despite the loss, Ullmark continues to play his best hockey as an Ottawa Senator at the right time. The goaltender was the reason his team got to overtime. Ullmark made several 10-bell saves, 45 in all.

The 32-year-old made highlight reel glove saves off Seth Jarvis, Taylor Hall and a clutch stop off Staal with only 14 seconds remaining in regulation to keep the Senators hopes alive in extra time. Then there was the do or die save on Martinook’s penalty shot.

Though Ottawa has failed to win a game, Ullmark boasts a 1.99 Goals Against Average, .933 Save Percentage in his two starts.

Senators near misses

Unlike Game 1, Ottawa had many scoring opportunities Monday. Per Natural Stat Trick, the club recorderd 19 high danger chances as opposed to 11 in their playoff opener.

Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens finally got the Senators on the board after trailing 2-0. Both goals being somewhat fortunate as Batherson’s attempted pass bounced Carolina d-man Jaccob Slavin’s skate back onto to his stick. While Cozens sent a shot towards Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen which squeaked through his pads.

Tim Stützle hit the post early in the game. Brady Tkachuk and Michael Amadio each clanked pucks off a post in overtime. Amadio caught the crossbar alone in front of Andersen.

Travis Green Juggles lines

Sensing his team wasn’t cycling the puck, generating enough scoring chances, the Senators head coach made subtle changes to all four of lines.

Tkachuk went back to his old familar spot with Stützle. Claude Giroux shifted from the right side of Stützle to line up with Cozens on Line 2. Foegele and Nick Cousins also flipped trios with Cousins landing on the fourth line featuring Lars Eller/Fabian Zetterlund. Foegele took his spot alongside Shane Pinto and Amadio.

The net result was only one goal, but they stymied Carolina’s offense for the majority of the remainder of the game. The Senators outshot the Hurricanes 22-18 after the second period until Martinook’s OT game-winner.

Defense doesn’t rest

Injured in Game 1, Artem Zub wasn’t available as wasn’t Tyler Kleven who took part in the morning skate but not medically cleared to play. Lassi Thomson entered the Senators lineup, making his postseason debut.

Jake Sanderson (43:06), Thomas Chabot (40:50) each played more than 40 minutes, Jordan Spence 39:01, Nik Matinpalo 31:03. Thomson and Dennis Gilbert filled support rolls admirably, not looking out of place in a pressure situation.

On the play of Sanderson and Chabot, Green said, “It’s not just them. I expect those guys, they’ve been great for us all year. But missing the “D” that we are. I don’t know how many minutes “Manti” (Nik Matinpalo) played, 30-something minutes, a guy that wasn’t in our lineup not too long ago, is playing in our top pair. Throw Lassi in there, “Gibby” (Dennis Gilbert), they all hung tough tonight.”

There’s no doubt the Ottawa Senators have an uphill battle on their hands versus the league’s second-best team in the regualar season. However, if the Game 2 showed anything, Ottawa will no go down without a fight.
