The Mammoth Continue Their Winning Ways

The Utah Mammoth continue to stomp through their competition. Since their home opener on October 15th, they have won five straight. Maybe it’s the power of their new mascot, Tusky, or it’s their top guys getting the job done. The Mammoth are now in second place within the Central Division with 12 points. They are one point behind divisional leader Colorado Avalanche.

Nick Schmaltz, with a goal and two assists on Thursday night, brings him to 13 points in eight games. Clayton Keller registered two goals against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday. His second goal of the net was an empty-netter, but it holds significance. That goal is the 200th goal of Keller’s career. Not to be outdone by his teammates, Logan Cooley recorded a natural hat-trick in the Mammoth’s 7-4 win over the Blues. Cooley, who got off to a slow start this season, now has seven points in eight games.

Mammoth are on a Roll

Not only did Cooley record a hat-trick, but he did it substantially. Cooley became the 21st player in NHL history to score a hat trick in the opening 10:55 of any game. He becomes the first player to do this since Nashville Predators forward Rocco Grimaldi did it on March 25th, 2021. Cooley had 25 goals and 65 points last season. The Mammoth are hoping to get even more out of him.

Going a little unnoticed in Thursday night’s game is JJ Peterka picking up two assists. It is his first multi-point game as a member of the Mammoth. Peterka was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres during the off-season. He is here to add offense to Utah’s top six. So far, he has seven points in eight games.

The Mammoth are 3-2 against divisional rivals so far this season. They have two more divisional games coming up this weekend. First, they will travel to Minnesota to play the Minnesota Wild. On Sunday, they will be in Winnipeg to play the Winnipeg Jets. Utah has high hopes of being a playoff team this season. They look good so far.
