The Utah Mammoth opening night roster is set. They will start the season with a full 23-man roster: 13 forwards, 8 defensemen, and 2 goaltenders. This will give the head coach, Andre Tourigny, plenty of options to start the season.
There were some notable roster moves on Monday. Forward prospect Tij Iginla is assigned to the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. Daniil But is being assigned to the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL. As expected, Alex Kerfoot will start the season on Injury Reserve (IR) with a lower-body injury. Forward Liam O’Brien, defenseman Terrell Goldsmith, Juuso Valimaki, and goaltender Anson Thornton will start the season on the injured non-roster list.
Roster overview
The Utah Mammoth opening night forward group is: Nick Schmaltz, Clayton Keller, Dylan Guenther, Brandon Tanev, Jack McBain, Barrett Hayton, Andrew Agozzino, Michael Carcone, Kailer Yamamoto, Lawson Crouse, J.J. Peterka, Kevin Stenlund, and Logan Cooley. The eight defensemen are: Olli Maatta, John Marino, Dmitri Simashev, Ian Cole, Sean Durzi, Nick DeSimone, Nate Schmidt, and Mikhail Sergachev. With Connor Ingram traded to the Oilers, the Mammoth will start the season with Vitek Vanecek and Karel Vejmelka between the pipes.
Now, with their roster set, the Mammoth can prepare for their first game of the season. They will face off against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, October 9th. After a three-game road trip to start the season, the Mammoth will host their home opener on Wednesday, October 15th.
Utah Mammoth News Update
According to Frank Seravalli, the Utah Mammoth were trying to get Logan Cooley to sign an extension before the start of the season. However, his camp reportedly turned down an 8-year deal worth nearly $77 million. That would have carried a $9.6 million AAV. Cooley is in the final year of his entry-level contract (ELC) at $950,000. He will become an RFA at the end of the season. The Mammoth have all season to negotiate with Cooley’s agent, but I think they were hoping to get an extension done now and have one less thing to worry about during the season.
