Utah Mammoth star forward Logan Cooley suffered a brutal leg injury earlier this month. The injury is leaving him sidelined for the foreseeable future. Cooley (21) suffered the injury to his left knee when he crashed into the net during Utah’s game against the Vancouver Canucks on December 5th. He hasn’t played since, and the Mammoth released a statement on Thursday to provide a timeline for his return.
The Mammoth’s general manager, Bill Armstrong, stated that Cooley will miss roughly eight weeks of action. This puts him on track for a late January or early February return to the ice. Cooley is a candidate for the Team USA hockey team at the 2026 Olympics in Milan. It’s unclear whether the injury will prevent him from playing or how it will impact the potential for him to be selected.
Utah Mammoth Missing Logan Cooley
Cooley is in his third season in the NHL. He is a former first-round pick, 3rd overall in the 2022 draft. He has been enjoying another great start to the season this year. In his first 29 games, Cooley has 23 points, including 14 goals, which leads the Mammoth. He is coming off a season in which he registered 65 points in 75 games.
In 32 games this year, the Utah Mammoth (14–15–3) have 31 points and are sitting in fifth place within the Central Division. The absence of their star centerman will be a big loss for the team, and I’m sure they are hoping to remain in playoff contention while he is out. If they can stay close in the standings, then they can make a big push for the playoffs once he’s back in the lineup.
As of Friday morning, the Mammoth are two points back of a wild card spot in the Western Conference. They are eight points behind the Minnesota Wild for third place in the Central Division. For now, their focus should be on getting into one of the two wild-card spots.
