Flyers

All three Philadelphia Flyers at the 2026 IIHF World Championship tournament in Switzerland were back in action on Monday. Team Canada plays Denmark, while Sweden takes on Czecia.

Canada 5- Denmark 1

Team Canada (3-0-0) remained undefeated in preliminary round play with a five-goal explosion after 40 minutes of scoreless play. Just 28 seconds into the final stanza, Team Canada finally broke the deadlock. After the Danes turned over the puck near their blueline, Flyers’ right winger Porter Martone finished off a tic-tac-toe sequence with Sidney Crosby and Macklin Celebrini. Later, Martone and Crosby set up a Ryan O’Reilly goal that opened a 4-1 lead. Overall, Martone has five points (1g. 4a) through the first three games.

Sweden vs. Czechia

At 2:20 p.m. EDT, Sweden (1-1-0) takes on Czechia. Flyers prospect Jack Berglund had two assists in Tre Kronor’s opening loss to Canada. Carl Grundstrom did not dress in the opener, but played and recorded an assist in Sweden’s 6-2 win over Denmark on Sunday. The Czechs are 1-0-1.

Team Toyota Spotlight: Tyson Foerster

In this third full NHL season, Flyers winger Tyson Foerster was off to an outstanding start to his 2025-26 campaign. That changed on December 1, when the Pittsburgh Penguins came to town.

Thing started off well enough that night. During a Flyers’ 5-on-3 power play, Foerster blasted home his 11th goal of the season on a one-timer from the left flank. The power play continued, now at 5-on-4. Moments later, Foerster attempted another one-timer from near the same spot.

This time, he suffered a severe arm injury on the shot attempt. Holding his right arm, Foerster cast aside his glove and disappeared down the tunnel.

Foerster missed the next four months of action. He worked diligently to return and did so on April 2 against Detroit.

Upon returning to the Flyers’ lineup, Foerster had immediate success while playing on adrenaline. However, he hit a wall near the end of the regular season and struggled offensively until Game Three and Four of the Carolina series. Foerster notched his lone goal (and point) of the playoffs in the first period of the final game against the Hurricanes.

While he was struggling to regain his offensive touch, Foerster tried to shift his mentality to something similar to his rookie NHL season. He focused first and foremost on not being a defensive liability. Foerster briefly moved to the fourth line against the Hurricanes. He moved back up again near the end of the run.

Foerster enters the final season of his career deal come the 2026-27 season. It will be a very important campaign for the player and the team alike.

Sporting uniform number 9 during the 1970s and early 1980s, Bob “the Hound” Kelly carved a special legacy during nearly 50 years working for the organization.

scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in Game 6 of the 1975 Final against the Buffalo Sabres (which adds golden anniversary symbolism to why a game against the Sabres was chosen for his tribute night).

The Flyers reached the Cup Final four times in Kelly’s career, winning twice. To this day, playing a role on a winning team meant far more to him than any personal accomplishments. Nevertheless, in a bottom-six role as the left wing on Mel Bridgman’s line, Kelly had a 22-goal season. When Tom Gorence joined the club as a 21-year-old rookie, the trio of Bridgman, Kelly and Gorence (the KGB) line frequently provided a spark to the club.

After his Flyers tenure finally ended, Kelly went to the Washington Capitals. There, on a talent-starved club, Kelly played a more offensive-oriented role (career-high 26 goals, 62 points) in addition to much-need grit and physicality (157 penalty minutes, his most since 1972-73).

Kelly, however, did not enjoy his time with the Capitals. Once again, the personal stats meant nothing to him. Washington in that era was a perennial losing team that lacked the sort of unity and identity he’d come to know well during the Broad Street Bullies era with the Flyers.
