HOW IS THIS A PENALTY?
I’m not a fan of criticizing officiating. And no, this wasn’t the worst call in the history of hockey. It’s also not what directly cost the Vancouver Canucks their latest loss. The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Canucks, 5-4, on Tuesday evening.
But I’m struggling to see the “hook” in this Liam Ohgren play. It looks like he takes the puck. This was a key turning point. Ohgren scored. But it was called back for said penalty. The Ducks score one of their three power play goals.
Even our own ref, Tyler on the Shifts and Pucks podcast, did not think this was a penalty. His message.
“Ref maybe wouldn’t have called it if he was on the opposite side of the ice. But that’s a stick lift and didn’t impede the progress of the puck carrier… even gained body position”
Five Fights? In this economy?
It’s been a long time since there has been more than one fight at Rogers Arena. Tuesday night, there. The main event was Jacob Quillan, who had two. Not that fighting is the be-all and end-all, but it’s nice to see some emotion at home. The home games have been far more entertaining than last year.
Let’s quickly talk about Quillan. 9: 36 5 vs 5.. Two hits. He showed some grease and grime, Something the Canucks lack. It’s a good start. Let’s see what he can bring.
Wilander late scratch due to injury.
I’m not saying they win the game if Willander plays. But his presence was missed. But he’s been their second-best defenceman 5 vs 5. He’s been showing some steady progress and was missed.
A thought on the Ducks.
The power play is incredible. If you are ahead of the Edmonton Oilers in power-play standings, you are an incredible powerplay. They are at 34.0%, second in the NHL, Cutter Gauthier has an incredible shot. Sennecke and Carlsson are stars. But their blue line needs work. They had five hits and eight giveaways from their blueline. They miss Jacob Trouba, Radko Gudas, and John Carlson. They put Nick Jensen on waivers earlier this week. They need to find some veteran defenseman and, quite frankly, be better defensively to be a true contender. Right now, they are way too chaotic.
Dawali night.
It was the tenth annual Diwali night on Tuesday. It’s one of their colorful and fun nights on the Canucks Calendar. Great music and great entertainment. They always bring some great designs over the years. The Punjabi community has been a very passionate part of the Canucks community.
