Two Chicago Blackhawks prospects made their World Junior Summer Showcase (WJSS) debut on Tuesday in Minnesota. Marek Vanacker (1st round, 27th overall in 2024) and Sacha Boisvert (1st round, 18th overall in 2024) suited up for Canada Red in a hard-fought 4–3 shootout loss to Canada White.
Vanacker and Boisvert entered the tournament looking to make a strong impression in front of Team Canada decision-makers, and both showed promising flashes in their opening game.
Marek Vanacker – LW – Third Line (with Martin and Beaudoin)
Vanacker stood out as one of the most noticeable 200-foot players on the ice. His energy was evident from the start, constantly pressuring opponents, winning puck battles along the boards, and making smart reads to force turnovers. While the physicality was toned down compared to regular-season action, Vanacker still played with intensity and grit.
He was especially effective near the crease, where his smart positioning helped generate offensive chances. Vanacker’s drive, work ethic, and willingness to get to the dirty areas were clear strengths throughout the game.
Sacha Boisvert – LW – First Line (with Martone and Catton)
Boisvert got the nod on the top line for Canada Red, skating alongside Philadelphia Flyers 2025 first-round pick Porter Martone and Seattle Kraken 2024 1st-rounder Berkly Catton. While the chemistry between the trio was still developing, Boisvert showed strong offensive instincts and good puck control.
There were several opportunities where Catton set him up for scoring chances, but Boisvert couldn’t quite finish. Still, for a first appearance, he looked sharp and composed. His size and skating were evident, and if he continues to play alongside Catton and Martone, he should have every opportunity to shine as the tournament progresses.
