We’re almost a month out from the start of the regular season. Looking at the Leafs roster as it stands, you have to wonder whether the defense will hold up. They have a lot of over-30 defensemen, and it wouldn’t take much for the defense to collapse, with few ready prospects to jump into the NHL this year. The goaltending looks sound, and the forward units are rounding out. A good 2nd line center would help, but Tavares may have one more good year left in his body. It’s a gamble, and trades could still occur, but the Leafs look to challenge for a playoff spot, as long as they get off to a quick start. Jim Hiller is a question mark behind the bench, but maybe he’s the tonic to get the best out of the core players. It should be a competitive and interesting season, especially in the Atlantic.
