ParticipantI’m curious to see what becomes of Moore, probably just training camp fodder but they are talking about how his shot looks better already after working on it over the summer.
Moore, Dach, Reichel or Mikh 3rd line may actually be a difficult line to play against and produce some points and take pressure off of the top 2 lines.

ParticipantHey, Lou…….. i think you under value McTavish and by a good bit. He’s not a middle 6 C, look at the numbers, his floor is 2C IMO. Lou, he was drafted in 2021 and played his 18/19 yr old draft +1 season in the OHL and 9 games with the Ducks then his 19-20-21 yr old seasons with the Ducks. In those 3 yrs he put up 43 in 80 as a 19 yr old rookie, 42 in 64 and last yr and 52 in 76 as a 21 yr old!! At 220 lbs. A centerman in the Bigs. That sound like a middle 6er?.
And as great as Rinzel looks and as great Lev’s traits are they have 27 NHL games between them while McTavish has 229 NHL games playing center as a 220lb 19-20-21 yr old who’s scored at a .61 clip. …. Anything we attribute to Lev and Rinzel today is pure projection but with McTavish we have a 230 NHL game sample size.
And before I forget, I meant to post this in every McTavish post, how do you see Bennett? A middle 6er? What would you give for a blood and guts mother humpin bastard like Bennett for all sorts of reasons and boxes checked? …… Remember now, his high pts for a season is 51!!!
I’m not beating the table for McT but I kinda am. Or at least I’m all for swapping out elite D prospect (system strength, for elite forward prospect (system weakness but less so with the Frondell add) and it just so happenes McTavish fits every box of what I’d love em to add. ……….. I guess for another blog is resource allocation? In 5 yrs if Rinzel and Artie reach their ceilings will it cost 40 mil per to pay em? And if so is that proper asset allocation?

I hear you Rico, but let’s say that Bedard and Frondell hit their ceiling(could very well happen), that would make McTavish a 3C at $7-8M AAV, I don’t think that is good asset management either. Guys like Bennett and McTavish are valuable to cup contending teams, no doubt, but let’s see how these kids develop before they give up too early on them, especially the seven I mentioned earlier.September 22, 2025 at 11:13 am #36906BetweenTheDots
ParticipantI bet the Leafs regret trading their 1st round draft pick to us to get Mrazek off the books.
That’s why i appreciate KDs approach of not rushing the rebuild like the Leafs did.

There are more legitimate #1 centers in the league than legitimate #1 RD’s, so I’m going to respectfully disagree. Look at the Leafs, they have Matthews as a #1 center, who’s their #1 RD? Let me say this, they are both very important positions on a hockey team, however as much as I like McTavish, he’s not a #1 center. The Hawks are in an envious position to have possibly two legitimate #1 RD’s, I would run with them for the next ten years.Riddle me this, Batman…would the Queafs trade Matthews for a #1 RD?
Not after losing Marner to Free agency. The Leafs are trapped in what to do next, the window is beginning to close for that as quickly as it opened
I wouldn’t of traded either RDman for Marner either and have to pay him all that money

ParticipantRico,
I respect your hockey knowledge and your opinion, however I do not agree with moving a RD with top pair probability for a middle six center. Both Artie and Rinzel have that type of talent, and while I’d love for the Hawks to acquire McTavish, I’m not willing to pay that price. Bedard, Nazar, Frondell, Vlasic, and the two aforementioned Dmen are part of the future core, I’d have to be blown away to trade any of those six and I would add Knight to this list as well. Who’s to say Frondell won’t turn into a McTavish, he has the same type of skill set and is actually a better skater.Hey, Lou…….. i think you under value McTavish and by a good bit. ParticipantNot very likely Robin, and neither would I trade McDavid or McKinnon for a RD, however the discussion was related to McTavish, not superstar centers.

ParticipantThis doesn’t make sense. There’s just as many #1 RD in the league as there are #1 centers. Which is valued more depends on each team’s situation. Hawks have 8-9 NHL d-men but very few blue chip forwards let alone #1 centers. You trade from a position of excess strength to fill the voids of weakness.
Hawks are built through several drafts. Just like Theo did with the Cubs when he selected all dominant bats with his high picks for several years (Bryant, Schwarber, etc), Hawks shored up the blueline and went heavy with high floor speedy forwards. Theo filled the pitching void in free agency just as Kyle will next summer with the UFA forwards. Sharks did the opposite and will look to fill all their blueline deficiencies with free agency as well.

ParticipantTrading a RHD like Arty or Rinzel should get us a bonified #1 centerman plus.

ParticipantThe big thing is building from the back end. Looks like we have our goaltending, and our top 6 defensemen look like they could be a solid defense of the future. Trading a RHD for a #2 centerman now, a number 3 when Frondell comes over, doesn’t make a lot of sense. Trading a RHD like Arty or Rinzel should get us a bonified #1 centerman plus. Trading Jones with his bulky contract for a young #1 goalie and a 1st round pick shows what RHD are worth, even when trading from a point of serious weakness.
