ParticipantAgreed (and hopefully never again). You cannot plan for that…
But the current growth rate is catch up, I do not expect the cap to grow by $9-10M per year, exponentially.
And if the rumours are true, the NHL wants to add 2 more teams (Atlanta 3.0 for some reason is one of them, Houston likely the other). Will be interesting to see if they increase revenue significantly or if they are below the average revenue threshold that exists today, which might slightly impact the cap.
In the end, it’s the fans who end up footing the bill … with the current inflation rate in the US, the financial flexibility of those fans is diminishing quickly.
There’s so much you can charge before the stands start emptying up … also TV contracts might also get limited in growth as networks keep losing subscribers. JMOAs for 2 new teams … God no (especially not Atlanta!!!), there’s barely enough NHL caliber players to fill out the current teams rosters.
I’m not interested in losing prospects after we just went through a rebuild.June 26, 2025 at 12:44 pm #11939Pat1993

ParticipantPer Lebrun:
More on the 84-game reg season starting in 26-27 season (reduce pre-season to 4 games max per team), the idea would be to start the reg season in last week of September as a result of shorter pre-season.
The added games likely coming within the division.June 26, 2025 at 1:00 pm #11941Pat1993

For a 32 team, makes sense, if you balance the schedule.
2 x 31 (all) teams = 62 games
+ 1 x 15 conference teams = 15
+ 1 x 7 division opponents = 7Total 84 games.
So you play the other conference x 2, the other division in your conference 3 times, and the teams in your division 4 times.
But that all gets screwed up again if they go to 34 teams, which they are talking about.

Participantmeh, for me there’s too much to be improved before they should consider making the season longer, whether the math adds up perfectly or not.

ParticipantInteresting:
Good summary of the market by Don Waddell:
“Right now, there seems to be a shortage of players because everybody wants players for players…It’s been a different year for I gotta be honest with you, all my years that I’ve been doing it.”
Something has got to give at some point.
Or it is gonna be a boring 2 weeks.

While there are more games, I think they want to shorten the season length, overall, by starting in September.

If you are starting 2-3 weeks earlier and add 2 games, the season will be longer in duration, but will not be extended further into the summer…
(Unless they add stupid pre-playoff play-in games).

Participantosti de quotes de tabarnak…
I highly doubt they’ll start that early, I could be wrong but they’ll probably start it early enough just to incorporate the extra games, the league has been very stubborn about this.
