If there is one foolproof indicator that expectations are different this year for the Montreal Canadiens, it’s the fans’ reaction to the team’s play.

      New blog!

Interesting that you talk about the kids, as the Habs traded for Danault last night before the roster freeze.

This better not mean less playing time for the kids, specifically Kappy (unless it is to give him a little less PK time).

I suspect Beck is going back to Laval, not Davidson.

What does the lineup look like?

      CC / Zuk / Bolduc
      Slaf / Kappy / Demidov
      Anderson / Danault / Gallagher
      Texier / Evans / Voleno
      Davidson

Bottom 6 is probably fluid, but they better not play with the top 6.

Will be interesting to see what happens if/when Newhook and/or Dach come back.

I do not think Laine plays another game with the Habs.

He will meet the team in Boston next week, per reports, will not likely play either weekend game.

Glad things are going well on your end, Pete.

Things are pretty good here, finally got some time off work (out until Jan 12), so we will likely relax a lot, visit w/ family, maybe do some day / overnight trips we have been talking about for a while (but that may depend on if we can get some snow that stays around for more than a few days).

      Really enjoying that K(i)DS line.

I’m still wondering if Kapanen is the “real deal”, he’s probably the one who’s impressed me the most so far simply because I was not expecting this kind of production from him.

Slaf also seems to have found another notch to his game, as he completes the line really well with his physicality.

I didn’t mind the selection all that much but I was expecting Texier to try another move, that one looks kinda dumb when it fails lol…

I guess it depends on the execution, Suzuki was able to use the same move for a while before goalies started catching on.

The Danault trade happened a few hours after I sent the blog for posting.

      Because of course it did.

Love the trade and I’m glad Danault (who never should have left imho) is back. He’ll fill a glaring need as a left handed centreman.

If you remove this season (where Danault obviously didn’t work with his new coach), Danault remains a pretty effective player.

The fact he’s signed for only 1 more season after this year makes it a perfect transition move to Hage if things go smoothly with the young man.

I don’t know which other options are/were out there and the pricetag attached to them. But I wasn’t a fan of giving up too much for a Kadri (whom I hate) or a O’Reilly as they didn’t really fit into what should remain the objective for this team: start your cup competitive window in 2 years.

true, when looking at the bigger picture, this season has been an anomaly in Danault’s career, chances are he’ll manage to get on a better pace with the habs. I still would’ve preferred having LA retain salary, but it isn’t a huge risk either.

totally agreed on the older and potentially much more expensive options, Hughes did well to stay away from those since they wouldn’t fit all that much in the habs’ rebuilding plans.

Not sure if Evans is going to miss some play time, but at least they made a trade before he got hurt, or the Kinds might have asked for more.

I am not sure the trade was worth a 2nd round pick, but if Evans is out long-term, I won’t grumble too much.

Danault and Evans as the 3 / 4 Cs is an upgrade.

They need help to improve the PK, they got it

They need help in team defensive play, they got it

They need help with face-offs, particularly from the left, they got it.

And he is someone that has played on Montreal and knows what the pressure is like.

I just hope he will accept his role as a bottom 6 player and not pout about lack of power play or offensive opportunities… he is known to be a whiner that way and that just kills the vibe of a dressing room.

Overall, this is a low risk trade, if expensive, that does not have long-term implications associated to it such as the other options you mentioned.

yeah, seems to be a knee injury in Evans’ case, hopefully he doesn’t require surgery or anything like that, enough with the injuries already god damn it.

Also, this also frees up the Suzuki line to not always have to play against top lines most of the game, if Danault (and a healthy) Evans lines are ready, the Habs can match up better (especially at home), giving the Zuk and Kappy line more offensive opportunities.

Complaining to the media that you are not getting PP time or playing more / different roles is how I perceive whining.

      But whatever.

When he is not happy, Danault can cause problems.

Kapanen can skate with Demidov and his hands are not so bad. It works for me.

I said before the season started that Demidov could drive his own line by himself and did not need an elite centre to play with him. Was I wrong?

Even Newhoook was doing great there before he went down. He also can skate like the god damn wind. Laine? Not so much.

I had Laine on the fourth line or in the stands before the season began. I know Laine is injuried right now, but still. Would you put him in mtl top 6?

no, I also had the same assumption, but at the same time the guys playing with Demidov need to be talented enough to follow his pace and playmaking abilities, which I wasn’t sure about for Kapanen.

I’m not too worried about that to be honest.

Danault isn’t at the same spot he was in his career when he left Montreal, and he certainly hasn’t played the same role with the Kings.

Back in 2020-2021, you could understand him, getting close to free agency, being frustrated with not getting any powerplay time as he was able to get around 50 points without it. Add to that the fact he was, mostly by default, our most productive centre and you have the perfect cocktail for a player to ask/want more quality icetime. Unfortunately for him, his best use was more on the PK and it followed him in LA despite getting a little powerplay at first over there.

In the end, Montreal traded Jordan Harris for Patrik Laine and Philip Danault…. which is an absurdly good return when you phrase it like that.

Laine is truly a headcase for me…. He’s the kind of guy that would play in the Olympics for Finland but somehow I still don’t want him on my team as he fits nowhere.

Maybe there’s a team out there, desperate for scoring and ready to give him a shot that would take him off our hands for a minimal return…. but I doubt it.

He’s supposed to come back healthy at some point this year and I’m guessing he’ll play some games. But I don’t expect his leash to be very long unless our powerplay somehow starts doing terribly and he’s seen as the solution.

Well it’s in the middle of Quebec city… so about a 2h20 drive away from where I live.

Read this trade tree all started with a 9th round draft pick in 2003 (Halak) and follows down through the Halak / Eller trade…

      🤣

      These things go on forever.

      Trade trees are neat.

Just like how trading Plekanec to the Leafs for a few months somehow gave us Lane Hutson.

Part of Quebec City, it is really fun to hang around and walk in the summer, but it is a little more special in winter (when snowy), especially around Christmas time.

Lots of interesting places in the lower part of the city too.

I have really enjoyed the times I went there for short vacations.

Which wasn’t true. He wanted the same $ he got in LA, but MB refused.

Since he left, “They” had to create a reason for their loyal media arm to convince the fans that Danault leaving was actually good.

pretty much the way I see it, yes, except maybe for that “loyal media” conspiracy, but that’s another story loll…

he’s always been professional about everything imho, and even if he wasn’t necessarily contributing on the scoreboard, the effort was always there, so I’m pretty sure his teammates didn’t notice any sulking or whatever.

5 games in a row with at least a point, not too bad considering the standings.

The only problem with that is that every team in the east has gotten over 50% of their possible points this year… the 1 point is nice, but they need to be getting 2 (especially with a lot less tiebreakers than some other teams).

I think there are like 4 or 5 teams in the league that have not gotten 50% of their potential points, just seems insane to me.

There is not one team in the East that is a lock to make the playoffs. Not. One.

Mtl is in a good position overall right out and thats all you can ask for. Should be a race to make it right untill the end.

very simple solution, just use Chrome, and add these 2 extensions from the Chrome Store: Adblock, and Adblock Plus.

      Slaf on fire.

Where are the haters now? 18 points in his last 16 games… first line was on fire with him onit and has since cooled off, because of injuries, he was asked to step into the second line, that one is now on fire.

And it is not just the points, it is his use of his body to hit, protect and dig out the puck and a much improved defensive game, too.

Was OK with the pick when made, so happy with that pick right now.

Did not get the win tonight, but they got one point when they should not have gotten any.

Should be a race to make it right untill the end.

yeah, in the Western conference, there’s a 30-point gap between the first and last place, in the East, it’s only 11 points, wtf.

A good performance from Monty would go a long way to both helping the team and letting Fowler develop properly in Laval. Sadly, he hasn’t shown anything this season that could inspire confidence in that regard.

As for Texier, he’s kinda there by default. Bolduc doesn’t seem to click all that well with Suzuki and Caufield. In fact, I’m thinking there’s a good chance Dach ends up on their wing when he comes back if the Demidov-Kapanen-Slafkovsky line keeps producing the way they have.

From what I’ve read, Dach should be back in the lineup early January, so we’re talking in about 1 to 2 weeks.

As for Bolduc, it’s not an exact science of course but since you asked:

I don’t think he process the game at the same speed as the other two just yet. He’s a good shooter, he’s decent along the boards but he doesn’t seem to think the same way they do in the offensive zone. It might simply be by lack of experience. Caufield didn’t play like he’s playing right now when he was 21, same thing with Suzuki and both players were better prospects/more talented than Bolduc so we need to be patient with him. As I said, his shot remains a weapon and, eventually he might belong on a top 6 line. Time will tell.

personally I think Bolduc isn’t top line material, but more of a middle 6 guy…

I’m sure they could put Slaf there again and it would work but his chemistry with Demidov and Kapanen makes it hard to not keep them together.

      He probably isn’t, no.

This being said, and Slaf is the perfect example of this, we need to be patient with young players.

Slaf has looked better and better and better each year and there was still noise about trading him away for a 2nd line centre. Bolduc is in his second season in the NHL, on pace for more or less 20 goals…. he’s doing fine, he’s just being asked too much too fast.

Alex Burrows, Pascal Dupuis, Christ Kunitz…. none of these guys were technically first line materials but they found a way….. why not him in a few years?

Until then, Dach would be a fine option.

@ Scabeh: agreed, way too soon to say he is not a first line (or top 6) player. Slaf is only started to get there after 3 seasons i the nhl and he was a 1st overall pick. Its only Bolduc 2nd season in the NHL. I think fans forget how green and how young he is.

agreed with your assessment about Bolduc and Slaf, patience is key.

that being said, Bolduc definitely has all the tools, but perhaps as MSL likes to put it, his “computer” might not be quick enough to follow the other two guys on the top line, a bit like with Anderson (but more offensively gifted, that’s for sure lol).

Dach and Guhle should be back in the next week, Evans 2 weeks later.

Going to be interesting to see what happens with the roster… I suspect Blais and Engstrom will go down to Laval.

      Beck when Evans is back.

Despite their inconsistencies this year and spotty goaltending, if someone said the Habs would be 21-12-6 with 48 points in 39 games (or about a 101 pace), 99% of us would have been very happy with that prognostication.

Imagine what they can do if they can stay healthy, play hard like the last few games (win or lose)s, and get some decent/consistent goaltending in the second half…

Sucks that Dach will probably not be back, but Hage, Pickford and Zharovsky are looking good not to mention Newhook and Guhle coming back. I just hope they will not be a very good regular season team but when PPs are hard to come by and no OT in POs it hopefully does not get too disappointing.
I think the next couple of years will be for tweaking as we seem to be very close, but I trust HuGo and like what they have been doing.

I get why / and sorta glad CC and Lane were left off of team USA – let them rest for the last part of the season into the playoffs.

Jason Robertson being left off team USA is just absolutely bonkers as shit.

Kappy made the Fins, which is cool.

Slaf likely as well, have not seen their team.

with their forward group, I get why Caufield was left out, but Hutson is a more questionable decision imho, especially over a Seth Jones, or even a Noah Hanafin

oh I get the size thing, but don’t tell me you’d rather have Seth Jones on your team over Lane Hutson…

Hutson has been playing literally all of his life against bigger guys, and he’s still finding a way to be effective even at the NHL level, I’m not mad about it or whatever but I do find it rather silly.

but hey, good for team Canada I guess, not having to play against him 😉

I’m still not 100% convinced he’ll be able to maintain this pace but I’m starting to think he can.

Will be interesting if they ask Hutson to move back to the right side or force Ghule to swap over there…

Hutson has been pretty much unstoppable since being moved to the left (natural side).

Maybe Ghule plays on the 3rd pair for the first few games, so might not be an immediate issue, but we will see.

yeah, and decisions will also need to be made once Newhook, Dach and Laine come back, although for the latter I think he might be sitting in the pressbox for a while since he doesn’t really fit anywhere for now.

I like Cody but the story was way better with him chasing the title and Reign with that crazy run as a heel. I like Drew so I dont mind but I expected him to lose after he burned that picture.

I only watch some promos here and there and part of the matches. Its way too long to watch more than that, for me that is.

Fatu and Bron are getting there as main eventers. Gunther is the top heel right now I would say. May win the Rumble or a title soon enough.

Was a little alarmed when I arrived at Habs optional skate Sunday and saw Lane Hutson wasn’t on the ice.
He said he was told it was a mandatory day away from the ice for him.
He didn’t love it, but he understood it.
      “Lot of games,” Hutson said.

Habs need to find a way to keep Hutson on the left side, even if that means playing Guhle on the right or on the 3rd Pair.

I was gonna say they could send Veleno or Blais to Laval, but in both cases I think they need to go through waivers, so you’re right that they might need to send a goalie down if they don’t want to lose anyone…

Dobes has something like 37 starts in the NHL and I think the Habs have gotten points (W or OTL) in 26 of those starts (that is a .638 point percentage).

Not sure why he is the odd-man out.

I get it, but it isn’t like the sample size of Dobes’ NHL career was big enough to consider that he’d be able to maintain such a pace… also there is such a thing as the “eye test”, especially for goalies, and I’d argue that the team is probably a bit more confident with Fowler in net.

personally I don’t mind if they decide to send Fowler down if that means he gets to play more in Laval and continues working on his game.

I guess it depends on a few things:

-what their development plan for Fowler is, and if they consider that he is truly ready at 21 years old to play full-time in the NHL (which is extremely rare lol)

-if they think Monty is back for real… yes he’s had a few good games, but he could still be fragile, so what happens then if he starts being horrible again?

and..? Price struggled a whole lot when he started, and it doesn’t change the fact that it’s very rare for a goalie to play in the NHL full-time at 21.

if he’s good enough and does the job, I guess they could keep him there, but I doubt that the plan was to bring him up this early.

Kinda False Price did good right off the bat, then kinda ran into problems after…but thats why we have super Monty if this happens ?

maybe they’ll decide that it’s best for Fowler’s development that he plays lots of games with the Rocket as their #1, since the habs aren’t completely in “win now” mode…

but I agree, plans can change for sure, and as long as there’s someone to stop the puck then it’s all good.

yeah, I think the point is we should just be careful around those who are more vulnerable, even a cold or the flu can become problematic for some people, so it’s just a matter of acting accordingly.

if you watch games of other teams you’ll notice that this is a trend. no wonder standings are so close, refs call it so teams stay in the game, or come back in the game.
2nd, Habs are the youngest team in the league, of course they will blown leads. nothing surprising there.

so far Texier is good at home, I’d like to see him perform on the road as well before giving him the spot. he could very well become a Alex Burrows type of player. if not he’ll be good on the bottom 6, ready to move up whenever needed.
as for Dach he has 30 games + playoffs to prove he can stay healthy in order to receive a contract offer. if he can, he’s the logical choice to fill the spot beside Caufield and Suzuki.

This hybrid defensive system needs to go. Just play zone already.

Tried it last year, didn’t work and abandoned it. Should LEARN from your mistakes. They made the change and the team started playing better defensively.

Monty & Dobes are poor goaltenders. Been saying it for a few years, Montemblow is not good enough. Period.

Also, this website is truly abysmal. Load times are brutal, things not loading at all. Can’t believe I actually miss the mess that was hockeybuzz.

We have a goaltending problem. As well as a defending one. This hybrid defensive system needs to go. Just play zone already.

Monty & Dobes are not good. This record is all about the offensive outbursts the Habs are capable of.

The d might be pitching a bit too much out there.

They gave a 2 on 1 on a turn over right at the start of the game.

Without a real winger for CC/Zuk (Texier or Bolduc are not the answer) and better goaltending, this team will not go very far.

Vast improvements overall this year, which has ben exciting to watch. They should make the playoffs, and depending on who they face, hopefully win a round.

But some hard decisions need to to made on this roster in the off season (yes, even as I hate to say it, Gallagher is one of them and no room for all of Dach, Newhook, Voleno…. time to make decisions there too).

Hopefully Fowler continues to evolve / is the real deal and they pick up a capable veteran back-up next year.

I expect them to swing for the fences in the off season to fill in some gaps.

Progress, and ahead of where I expected, so that makes me expect more from them…. and get really frustrated at games like last night against Buffalo.

Zharovsky, Hage and Fowler are on the way. Time wil time about Reinbacher.

Mtl already made a huge trade for Dobson. Bolduc should be usefull along the way.

The gaps will be fill over time with their prospects pool and the closer they get to the cup,you then make some trades to get your team over the edge.

i cleaned it off and shoveled around it. i think i might have lucked out because it’s supposed to be mostly sleet from here until tomorrow morning. it’s not really piling back up where i shoveled, it’s just kind of a light coating of slush down in there.

thing is though, Dobes might be better according to the “wins” column, but every time he’s trying to make a save, he’s all over the place, and he doesn’t look like a goalie that inspires confidence either.

anyway Monty played relatively well against Boston, and if it wasn’t for that last BOS goal he’d probably be playing tonight.

I mean I also try to get a 5 to 10 km walk with one of the dogs every Sunday, too. Not last Sunday, the one before, we actually did 14k to Ikea.

yeah, I just saw the club’s announcement, thanks.

fully deserved for Dobes and a logical decision, although they could’ve thrown Monty in there tomorrow, considering it’ll be a more important match-up against BUF on Saturday (my guess is Dobes is getting both starts, unless he gets totally humiliated tomorrow against the Nordiques lol).

Too many games left to this season to be a must win game just yet.

But the more games that they can win vs key divisions opponents in the playoffs race like the Panthers, Buffalo, Boston, etc., the better.

even if Dach or Texier play themselves out of the top line, I don’t really see where Laine would fit in the lineup… there isn’t really any spot for him in the top 6, and he definitely doesn’t correspond to a bottom 6 player either…

ya I jumped too, but Liam seems like an interesting prospect : 6.3 216, captain of his team and almost 2 pts per game

yeah, I get it, but I can’t believe this is the best return the rags could get for him…

I’d understand if he was purely a rental, but he even signed a 2 year extension now, so it makes zero sense to me lol.

Hmmm… the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Jordan Kyrou with CC and Suzuki.

Decent defensively, still only 27, averaged over 30+ goals the last 4 years, signed to a managable $8.1M til 30-31.

Been lots of talk – on and off – about him to MTL (mostly last summer).

Add Kyrou and subtract Laine and I think you have something really good there for the long-term…

I think that is my dream trade for the Habs.

(This should be posted in time for the NHL return after the Olympic break).

a silver medal is nice, but when it comes to hockey, Canada is all about gold.

the shots on goal and scoring chances were obviously in favor of Canada, but Saros kept things close until the end.
