Now that Shanny is gone, next up Marner?

This isn’t about who anyone wants to go / stay between 88 or 16, it’s about what can happen, what is realistic and ‘doable’.

Shanny was likely the one who who would have been all in on re-signing Marner and I think others in the organization aren’t willing to, and Berube is kinda’in that group.

I don’t think Berube will say it’s about a specific high end but soft player (as we know the Leafs have a few) but he will say we need more of things they don’t have and the only way to get those things is to change the people / cap distribution.

If they were going to move on from Nylander wouldn’t they have done so before they signed him to an 8 year deal? I guess they could try to move Willy but why would he agree to waive his full no trade deal? That makes zero sense – he knows if he stays Marner is likely gone and he will get bumped up to L1 to play with Matthews and get more ice time and more points.

We can (should) be mad at the players for their performances or lack thereof but the reality is there is blame for the current situation on a few folks but the bulk of it is the absolute stubborn and arrogant moron they just fired in Shanny.

Shanny who brought in an experienced GM and coach and then decided to go the complete opposite direction with Dubas and Keefe. Seriously an inexperienced coach or GM is ok if the other one is experienced but both being green to the NHL was a mistake.

The fact they didn’t give Marner the 8 or 8.5 x 8 his camp apparently wanted in 2019 and decided to wait out the season which cost them 3 to 3.5M per year, 2 less years AND resulted in them giving Marner a NTC for the last 2 fucking years of his deal (which in itself was insane when usually it’s the last year).

Then Shanny shit cans Dubas, brings in Tre and ties his hands by telling him he can’t move Marner.

Imagine the haul the Leafs would have got by trading Marner before the NTC kicked in?

Now all they can likely do is re-sign him and continue to have a horrifically unbalanced roster that won’t become a top 4 team or let him walk for nothing.

Fuck you Shanny, you fucked this team and it’s fan base over with your arrogance and belief you knew better than everyone else.

I never mentioned Marner specifically, I don’t want to upset any specific poster here……. ????

That being said I agree with you in his own mind he’s already at the club, grinding on a new team and his Leaf wedding ring is sitting at home on the dresser.

As much as I struggle with it on either end of the logical scale in that, largely for their versatility, I would rather have Marner than Nylander – and they are compared here because of the salary issues – but the fact is that Marner checked out before that series was over and game 7’s response from the hometown put a lid on it. Adjustments are so hard to make mid-series with players, but you can’t help but wonder if Domi swapping with Marner would’ve helped in any capacity. I think no matter who was up there Matthews not finishing on his chances severely limited the top line.

Let’s face it the 2LW was an achillies heel for this team. Holmberg was -6 at 5v5 in that series. That’s double the next closest (Tavares, Laughton, Lorentz and Carlo were all -3) and it’s been one because they don’t have the money to put it there. They need a 2C and then to move JT to the wing. They also will need a top-6 RW; I do think that because he’s a shooter, they could keep Nylander and Matthews apart and find a different RW.

Rielly may suck defensively, but he was only -1 and was on for more goals for than any other player on the team. I want him gone more than I want to keep him, but he’s not absent when the playoffs arrive. He’s just not physical. He’s never changing, but god I wish he could just put his body in front of the other team’s players rather than only his stick.

Keith Pelley just spewing the same bullshit, but I believe the guy legit wants to win. Glad to hear he’s not hiring someone to replace Shanny.

Honestly, what do you expect him to say?
But ya, no need to replace him just yet.

Maybe its time to move out Masai as well.

    They aren’t letting Marner walk.

    He’s already left the relationship.

Which is fine, but he can do the leafs a solid and do sign and trade. Help the team recoup something and he will leave here in a better view.
Unless he signs with Boston, Montreal, Tampa, or florida.
Although that would be leafy for him to light up the leafs for years to come playing on a rival.
    Ugh.
Hope he signs out west. Vegas, San Jose, Calgary.
Sign and trade him to vegas for Hertl….vegas is bound to dump him soon anyway.

The move to make is obvious – who they make that move with is up to the Leafs but letting a UFA walk to get the space seems a lot easier and less messy than trading a player with a multi year deal they are in the very early stages of – at least to me.
