Marner emotionally led the leafs to nothing. cool cool.
imagine Marner did an 8 year deal with the Leafs on his deal, he would be a UFA coming up, and in light of this offer sheet stuff how much could he have gotten? prob left 30+ mill on the table
If Marner was the emotional leader of the Leaf teams he was on then he was a fucking miserable failure at leading (which tracks). They played far too often with almost zero emotion in regular season and the playoffs where they couldn’t get it done for 8 of the 9 years wonder boy was apparently the ’emotional leader’. The grumblings of a fired head coach mean jack shit and maybe if Marner had held himself accountable more often the Leafs would have had more success.
Marner wives like AA and UG will jack it to Berube’s meaningless comments but the reality is Berube takes no accountability for his own unwillingness to adapt and play guys like Cowan until the season was over so he could trot out guys who were far less impactful in the line up. So it’s fitting Berube would say the loss of Marner was the biggest issue – it takes the heat off him and his staff who failed miserably – just like Marner did in the finals.

Berube reflects on Toronto’s two big losses

In his most candid discussion yet of what went wrong as the Maple Leafs plummeted to 28th place last season, Berube explained to Rob Simpson that Mitch Marner was the club’s emotional centrepiece.
“Mitch brought the energy and the emotion to the game on a nightly basis — and to practice. Vocal guy. Chatted a lot on the bench. Chatted a lot in practice. Brought the energy. He’d come back to the bench and let guys know: Pick it up. Let’s go. He was great. I really enjoyed coaching him,” the ex-coach said during an appearance on Simmer’s Morning Skate.
“We lost our emotional leader, for sure. It was a big loss. Not only the player but that side of it, too — in the locker room, on the bench, in practices. He held guys accountable.”
A casualty of Toronto’s failings in 2025-26, Berube also mentioned goaltender Joseph Woll’s absence in training camp, Chris Tanev’s injuries, and the team’s flat performance out of the Olympic break as contributors to the Leafs’ dropoff.
But Marner’s departure was the biggie.
“Never really found that winger to play with Matthews, just the chemistry of your No. 1 line,” said Berube, who believes his roster was better than the results.
“It bothers me…. Just couldn’t catch a hold of anything.”
Hiring a guy with zero NHL experience worked out brilliantly with Sullivan, so I’m looking forward to Werenka.

Good move to promote Gruden. He earned it and frankly he could be the head coach right now and it would be fine.

Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde will not be returning for the 2026-27 season.
There was no talk about the great PP coach (he he) Sullivan if he will return or not. Most likely not with John Gruden, Daniel Alfredsson and Brad Werenka being added to the coaching staff.The D mostly sucked so Van Ryn, himself a mediocre D, can go away. No issue there.
Uncle Fester seemed to get the Leafs to have one of the best PKs in the NHL despite being a trash team. One of the few bright spots the Leafs had last year was their strong PK. Would have been wise to keep that PK intact especially with the number of bottom-six grinders and FO winners they added. Probably should have kept him over adding Werenka.
