ParticipantI believe not any coach can succeed with this group of players. Some will do better, but not nearly good enough.
I mostly agree because Berube’s success came with a team that had a top-4 D that included Parayko, Pietroangelo, Bouwmeester and Dunn. Four balanced, 23+ minute per night guys. Then the bottom two guys were Gunnarsson, Edmundson and Bortuzzo on limited minutes. That’s far cry from having to deploy Rielly for 23+ minutes a night.
This collection of players does not suit Berube. With Marner, he had a reliable shut-down, Selke nominated winger who could shut down a line like Barkov. Without Marner, the Leafs top line is way worse defensively, which forces Matthews to play more defensively and also forces him to carry the puck more offensively. That has hurt Matthews a lot at both ends of the ice.
If this group of guys had a coach that let them play an all out attack and could organize the PP better, they would win more games 5-4 but ultimately lose in the playoffs, like they did under Keefe. The only way that style wins is if they have an elite world class goalie, kind of like how Vasilevskiy back stops the Tampa Bay Lightning. But the Leafs have two often injured back-ups so it doesn’t work.

ParticipantThe Leafs can play like this for another 60 minutes without scoring a single goal.
With a PP for 60 minutes and they still might not score a goal or win this game.
Steve Sullivan that PP genius…

ParticipantIs/will McMann be woth $5M cap hit on the open market?
wow!
I sometimes get the feeling, when he’s playing at his best, that he could be one of those ones that got away if the Leafs let him go but logically, the Leafs should sell high on him to rebuild.
He’s going to be 30, he’s 6’2″, 220 and is basically a 20 goal, 40 point guy. Considering this is a contract year, if he was going to “break out” it should / would have been this year. But he’s the same.
Then again, Hyman, at 31-33, had his 27-36-54 goal seasons. If the Leafs don’t sign McMann for 5 million, do they spend that 5 million on anybody better? Probably not.
