ParticipantI knew after Kap finally had a good playoff game that someone would post some stupidity about Toronto letting him go 6 YEARS AGO!!
Nevermind Pitts and St louisYa the Leafs have really missed his 14 to 30 pts every year since.
Kap had a good game, good for him.Yeah, much better to have a pile of shit like Maccelli at 4 times the price and miss the playoffs entirely.
You missed the broader point but you usually do so that’s no surprise.

Participanti would have never dreamed of trading matthews until this season. and not because of him, but because he is wasted here. toronto is wasting matthews the way that edmonton is wasting mcdavid. an elite generational talent just pissed away on mediocre teams. what really killed me and pushed me into trade territory was the gudas hit. gudas should have been gang piled by everyone on the ice, including the goalie. fuck that. you don’t target the teams captain and star player and no retaliation? what the actual fuck? matthews must have felt like shit knowing he was targeted by a notorious goon and his teammates just blew it off like it meant nothing. because it did mean nothing to spineless shits like rielly, willy, and carlo. if i was matthews, my mind would have been made up right then. i’d want out. fuck those guys.
trade matthews and set him free. like phil, he’ll win a cup somewhere else. it pains me to say it. i can’t believe i’m saying it but here we are.
i’m on the fence about willy. trade him if the return is right, but i don’t think he brings much in return for trade value versus what he’s worth to the team. the only pure oneway floating sniper winger we have. i don’t expect him to be a center, take faceoffs, kill penalties, or be defensively responsible. his job is just to score goals, which he’s good at. if the return is subpar, we keep him and let him show the new kids how to dress for instagram clout. if he gets you a first rounder, trade him and let him be soft somewhere else.
the problem with full rebuild is we’ve been here before. we drafted matthews and marner and fucked that up royally. so, we do it again? trade everyone for picks, draft new talent and then fuck that up again in 10 years when the new window is supposed to be open and remains closed because we’ve learned nothing and just shuffled the chairs again. it also kills me to say it, but i don’t give a fuck who wins the cup this year. i guess i’ll take mcdavid also, but i’d like to see marner win it just to rub salt in the wound and make the lesson more painful.
As soon as they let Marner walked, the team was done for. Matthews is not the same player with Marner. And the sad part is, even when Matthews was scoring 60-69 goals, he wasn’t scoring them often enough when it mattered in the playoffs. It’s very stupid and annoying that the Leafs gathered elite talent and pissed it away but that all comes down to management. They had a team of executives that made too many bad moves and drafted like absolute shit. Scroll up and I made a list of all the players the Leafs let go and drafted during the Shanahan years and it’s sickening how bad this team was at management.
I think Matthews has opened the door to leaving because the benefits of living in Toronto have dwindled to near zero. It’s not a desirable enough place to live or play anymore. He can make more money, get taxes less, have nicer weather, more privacy and still play competitive hockey on any one of the teams in the West in the USA.
Trading Matthews is about so much more than the shit bag team that refused to stand up for him. It’s just the biggest source of value the Leafs have to get younger in the shortest amount of time. The Leafs don’t have 1st round picks but trading Matthews could bring you the value of three or four 1st round picks immediately. And the same goes for Nylander. He brings the Leafs value in a trade more than he does on the ice. And if you trade Matthews, Nylander is the next one to ask to be traded, followed by everybody else over 25 who wants a chance to win somewhere else.
Yes, the previous rebuild ultimately failed but the Leafs don’t have any other options. They will fail at a retool even worse. At least will a full tear down rebuild, you can hire the proper management, overpay them all with the savings from paying the players way less after you trade them away, and rebuild this team properly; through the draft.

ParticipantChayka? thats a big Meh for me. his track record is pretty pedestrian. He did take big swings, but very mixed results.
Latest from Friedman: John Chayka and Scott White are the finalists for a “head of hockey operations” role with the Leafs
Chayka makes zero sense as the head of hockey ops. He doesn’t have the hockey mind or the experience. But given how stupidly Pelley is brainwashed into the AI advanced stats shit, odds are, he wins the job. Pelley is also a meddler so if he hires a poindexter to “run” the team, he can control him and the team.
White is also pretty meh. His entire career is running AHL teams. He has two decades of experience but not where it counts. He got stuck at the mid level management spot. I’d much rather grossly overpay for Jim Nill.
They need Chayka to be on the team at a lower level and grossly overpaid so he doesn’t care that he’s not at the top of the food chain with a legit hockey mind above him.

Participantleafs can play musical chairs with management and coaching all they want, but the rot starts at the top with mlse and pelley. after this debacle of a season, the questions need to be directed at the top. run it back, run it back, run it back, run it back, throw away money, hand out no trade clauses like candy, buy high sell low, scapegoating then trading marner for gimps and peanuts. thats not on berube or his assistants or the players. thats on ownership for letting this shit happen while they stack profits on a system optimized to make losing profitable. its a goddamm shitshow at the top. at this rate, i wont live long enough to witness the leafs finally win a cup or even make it to the semis. jesus fucking christ, are we supposed to cheer for ottawa or edmonton? i don’t know. just wanted to yell about it.
Pelley hasn’t been here for most of the above but he doesnt exude confidence in knowing what he is doing. Time will tell.
Ya previous managements have really screwed teh team but so have the current players.
Marner and Matthews have proven to not be players you build a team around, but no one knew that 9 years ago. The biggest error was having half the cap in 4 soft forwards and then of course the cap not rising as expected. Matthews and Marner should not have been giving cap hits over $10m for their first extension…they simply hadn’t earned it.
But when you print money cause the fans go no matter what, you dont have to pay attention to details, you can throw money around expecting it to fix things. Fans gotta stop going. I did years ago, I’ve completely lost interest in this team, they’ve been a joke for half a century.
Hopefully things change…..I’ve said for years on the old site and this one, you simply cannot “go for it” every year. You cannot trade away first rounders like they are nothing. Which the leafs have. The only good 1st rounder trades (trading away) the leafs have made in the past decade or so was for Muzzin, the one for Mccabe and Lafferty. But no screw ottawa….never cheer for them
Edmonton is my 2nd fav team, so I do cheer for them.April 24, 2026 at 11:51 am #71516Fakepartofme
ParticipantGreat game by Edmonton, of course, Kapanen with 2 goals. Too shit for Toronto though.
Anaheim is going to be dangerous one day but they play too loose vs a team like Edmonton. Coach Q will fix it. Another guy who the Leafs can’t hire, of course.

I tend to agree with you. Management and coaching can’t fix this current problem. But it can rebuild it from scratch with a giant head start. With Matthews and Nylander the Leafs have two individual players that can be winners somewhere else but not as core players in Toronto. Think of Phil Kessel but with twice the value. Step one has to be to trade these two guys at the 2027 draft. The Leafs can’t afford to tank in 2026 because it just pushes the 1st round pick to the next year. They’re better off building the value back up to recover a minimum of 5 major assets. Where it is five first round picks OR five top prospects or five young roster players. Or any combination.
Fuck Ottawa in it’s entirety. The entire shithole of a city can implode for all I care including the corrupt pieces of shit who run the country. The hockey team can go fuck itself along with it.
I’d much rather see Edmonton win it for McDavid.
