ParticipantThe Leafs have been chasing the Character grit leadership fantasy for half dozen years..just off the top of my head, all these players were to fill those needs . Muzzin, Simmonds, Foligno, Bogosian, Clifford, Giordano, RoR, Tanev, OEL, Laughton, Pacioretty, Reaves plus whoever
Thortnon, Marleau on and onbut keep trying
You know what is funny about that listen you provided? Not a single one of them were drafted or developed by the Leafs. Not a SINGLE one. And that’s the problem.
Where was the Leafs drafting and development team when all those guys were available on draft day? Were they asleep? Did the Leafs not have a draft pick at all? Or were they busy signing some 2nd tier 5’6″ Swedish winger?
Every single one of those guys the Leafs brought into the organization at either the cost of draft / prospect capital or they signed them when they were past their prime because they wanted to take a retirement lap on their “home” team.
But this franchise just keeps trying to do the same shit and expecting different results.

ParticipantIt’s got to be in your core group, not just add ons. This is what they have tried the whole Matthew’s era to no avail.

ParticipantI get the Laughton love from Leaf fans. He’s a throwback to a different era of Leafs hockey, guys who played with tenacity and gave a f@ck. But he should go because this team is not good enough and needs to be retooled. Having said that, the Leafs need to get a LOT more invested in drafting and acquiring character people. The whole “draft the most talented player” to the detriment of team need and player type has resulted in a team with zero leadership, and that folds when things get difficult.
Would you have drafted Matthew Tkachuk over Auston Matthews?
That’s the issue; having the elite talent is always too tempting to pass on. The issue isn’t having elite talent. The issue is not blending in enough character with elite talent.
For example, having Matthews is one thing but having Matthews plus Nylander is another. But at the same time, if the Leafs had drafted Nick Richie over Nylander, they’d be worse off.
There are players out there who play with skill and heart, the Leafs just need to find them. They had a chance at Sam Bennett before he left Calgary. They said no. They had Kadri and Hyman. They let them go. The players are available, they’re even within our system, the management team has just been too stupid to identify them or keep them.

ParticipantI Highly doubt the leafs would actually be sellers, but the only 3 players I would have on my no trade is Matthews, Knies and Cowan, trade the rest
Wow, Nylander has not made the list. Impressive.
For me, I would hang on to Laughton unless he wants too much $$$ on his next contract.
You might not get what the Leafs paid to acquire him.Absolutely makes no sense to keep Laughton. His best years are clearly behind him and yes his next contract is a trap contract. He has 8 goals and 10 points. Half his value is based on reputation of years past because his actual output is actual shit and replaceable. He’s not that good. But he’s useful enough to a desperate playoff team to give up a 1st round pick as insurance which is exactly what the Leafs stupidly did last year.
If he wants to come back, he can come back after the Leafs trade him for a 1st round pick. The Leafs don’t need to recover everything they gave up to get him but at minimum they need to bring back a 1st round pick.

ParticipantIf the Leafs do, by some miracle, fire Treliving and/or come to their senses about their inability to compete for a Stanley Cup this year, the prime candidates to be traded are: Laughton, Carlo, Maccelli, McMann, Jarnkrok, Roy and Stecher.
Between those 7 guys, the Leafs could bring in a lot of draft capital. Laughton, Carlo, McMann and Roy could be in the 1st round pick conversation. Maccelli and Stecher could bring in a 2nd each. Jarnkrok could be a 3rd or 4th round pick.
Having sven more draft picks might not do anything for them this year or next year but if they have the right scouts, that could pay dividends in the future.
From a “value” perspective, having that influx of draft capital could probably help the Leafs land an impact player if they flipped it all for a top-six forward or top-four D.
Either way, the names listed above should all be traded by the deadline.

ParticipantAh gee, Nylandergate is upon us
cause gave the middle finger to the TSN camera.
Another example of a total lack of maturity from Nylander. He’s been in this market long enough to know better. He’s not a leader, he’s a man child who cares more about how his hair looks than doing what it takes to win a Stanley Cup.
