the problem is trading for Carlo and Laughtons while Florida trades for Marchand and JonesYou should care about it because that’s the best way to acquire talent without a significant cost. Florida was excellent at finding value in players given away for free. The Leafs do the opposite, they let go of talent and don’t draft well enough to make up for it.
You know what else Florida did? They signed Bob. And people like you said they were stupid. The Leafs haven’t had an elite starting goalie in 20 years. They haven’t developed one either. They have two back-ups who are always injured.
Marchand and Jones wanted to play in Florida. Nobody great wants to play in Toronto. Not anybody who can win anyway. Just pajama boy and he’s a career playoff loser. The team isn’t strong enough to attract talent, the weather is shit, the taxes are absurd and management is retarded. You know what options that leaves you with? Learn to draft and develop players. Create a team through the draft that is so strong that players care more about playing here to win than all the negatives about playing in Toronto

The Leafs elected to draft elite talent. That’s fine. The mistake they made was not keeping the heart and soul grit guys they did manage to find like Hyman and Kadri as the glue.
I agree with you, hard work beats skill when skill refuses to work hard but I could make a team of hard working 4th liners that won’t win a single game because they just can’t score enough goals.
The Leafs need to tear it down and rebuild it back up but do it with balance at every position and every characteristic.
