ParticipantAnother game thatās barely watchable. This team is gutless. I thought the Kessel/Phaneuf years were the year of gutlessness. This is worse. The Leafs have two elite forwards and decent goaltending. But there is no heart, no compete, just playing out the string. Whatās bothersome is the idea that they canāt be traded. Rielly, Matthews, Nylanderā¦..canāt trade me if I donāt want to go. Buyouts are too expensive on these guys and the team should be shopping them after this season. This canāt go on any longer. Treliving and Burube are dead men walking. Itās not pretty.
Thankfully the ones who ācanātā be traded are simply the ones who get to ādecide whereā they get traded. Ontario is high attention, high taxation, high media intensity. Theyāll all take a trade to an ideal place, the answer to a Toronto NMC isnāt ānowhere?ā, itās āhow many specific locations please?ā lol

ParticipantI took a day to digest what just happened at the trade deadline. It was abysmal and with a competent GM, they would have gotten more. On the up-side, they kept their defensive core intact. The 3 players moved were easily replaceable. Where do I see them going? I figure that now that the trade deadline is over, theyāll settle in with their current roster. At the end of the year, theyāll fire the Coach and GM. While the playoffs continue, theyāll cull together who they want as GM and heāll bring in his own coaching staff. If I had my way, it would be the Hunterās but Iām guessing itāll be a more established GM and Coach. What needs to happen is the gutting of the bottom 2 lines of the roster. Through free agency, they need to find a competent winger that can play with Matthews and Knies. I wish that theyād consider moving Nylander, while heās still near the top of his game. Itās there they recoup picks and or a blue chip prospect. Iād like to see him traded to Utah in exchange for Logan Cooley. Put Cooley at second line centre and move Tavares to the wing. Get younger and move some salary. If Utah makes it into the playoffs, they might see it as an opportunity to advance, next year, with a 40 goal scorer. Leafs might need to sweeten the deal, but if itās manageable, make that move. Next, moving a goaltender. It depends what the offer is for any of the 3. If itās for one of the younger goalies, make sure itās a tangible young asset, either on the wing or on defense. Lastly, Morgan Rielly. Iām not sure about the structure of his contract, but if thereās a signing bonus, wait until after July 1st and find a new home elsewhere. Even consider a Darnell Nurse even up swap. At least Nurse has a physical element to his game, but heās also overpaid. Is it worth paying that extra $1.5M per to make that trade? Maybe. In closing, itās not hopeless. It looks like hot garbage right now, but with a proper GM and Coach, plus some free agents and a couple of trades, this team could bounce back into the playoffs next year.
One last thing. Boycott the games for the rest of the year. Boycott the team merchandise. Make it hurt in MLS&Eās wallet. Stop watching the games on T.V. Just stay away and let it burn. Who knows?
I see what youāre saying, however two minor disagreements, those forwards werenāt worth anything this year, fuck even Kadri needed his contract sustained by Calgary to get a proper kick back for him, the only guys who got anything decent were D men. It was an overselling trade deadline because too many teams were selling.
As for the second disagreement, do what I do, stream it on onhockey.tv for free using the Amazon Silk browser on a firestick, that way nobody gets paid š

Participantbefore Burube Matthews was .75 goals per game with him he is like .40
Has to be some coaching impact if its just goals that matter. maybe some injury stuff idfkOh itās both, the injuryā¦at first. Then he had to recover into a new style, one which uses him against defensively more against the oppositionās top tier guysā¦I think? Maybe itās out there with the hope heāll be doing the offensive role more but heās not? I donāt know.

ParticipantI agree Doz. Going with both a green GM and coach was a massive misjudgment by Shanahan, who was a green president himself. None of them knew how to handle it.
Yeah, Iām no JT hater by any means but they shouldnāt have signed him and just rolled with Kadri. Also the deal tossed at Rielly was far too kind for what he is. I wouldnāt have even hated the price tag without a NMC. I hope heās reaching a point where he will personally want a fresh start on a new team, I assume it will be a pretty even trade unless he has one of his step up seasons but Iām not banking on it since he hasnāt looked good under Berubeās game yet.
Either way, let the younger guys play for the rest of this year along with the core and the primary guys that will be put up for sale in the off-season now *shrugs*
Dozzer
ParticipantThis is mostly correct.
The Leafs wonāt choose to rebuild but Matthews can and will force their hand. If he decides to leave (he should), Nylander will waive his NTC and Tavares, in his old age, will realize heās better off chasing a Cup elsewhere. Rielly will take a hike too.
If they run back the same team and donāt fire Berube, this team will suck again. The UFA market is empty. The available options are old and underwhelming. Will the Leafs overpay to entice old, former star players or mediocre players to join an obviously dysfunctional, bad team in a terrible market?
The wild card is if they fire Berube and hire DeBoer. DeBoer is the ultimate runner up coach. He can turn a team around and get them to lose in the Finals.
Matthews and Nylander could easily get the Leafs a boatload of 1sts, top prospects and young roster players. If the Leafs trade them both at the 2027 draft, tank 2028, tank 2029, by 2030 they have an excellent chance to return to the playoffs. Also, July 2029 gives the Leafs the opportunity to sign McDavid as he might be a UFA and the Leafs would have unlimited cap space to overpay him while the rest of the team is still on ELCs.
Yup, thatās my guess, until their primary asset/captain bails on the team not much will change. The goaltending and D wonāt get mixed up without deals and the forward moves will sound bigger than they are in the media.
However once Matthews decides to head out I can see ownership keeping some of the valid youth and dropping/moving everything else to simply start over again, hopefully this time around they choose experienced leadership upstairs, and yes Iām dating that point back to Dubas and Keefe as well.

ParticipantI can almost guarantee MLSE will not allow a tear down followed by a rebuild starting now. They are gonna milk this ca$chow as long as possible as usual.
As usual they will try to Bandaid this thing, and they will fail. Pelley has the option of firing Treliving. But if the next GM is told not to rebuild, they will know this is doomed to fail. Too many holes, too many needs, not enough assets. What credible GM is going to want to take on a plan doomed to fail, only have to admit failure and rebuild in a year or two?
My best guess is Tree will be back. Because this is the Leafs, after all, and they will do the exact opposite of what they should do.
Itās looking like wonāt take that long, remember Matthews is a western American boy so he didnāt grow up watching the leafs, their games would have been on at fān supper time for him, so if they donāt get their shit back together in a hurry heāll bail, head back to the US, and likely play over in the west.
And when that happens the leafs will be a bunch of old guys, Nylander, some half decent younger guys and thatās it, nobody decent will sign here because of it and they will forced into a rebuild. Iām guessing 1 more year tops and if they suck ass again they sell Matthews July 2nd 2027 in his final year at half the cap hit once everything but $900K has been paid to him. The return would be sweet.
Dozzer
ParticipantWhy all the doom and gloom. When Matthews returns from the Olympics the Leafs will have a solid 2nd line checking center to start the rebuild.
Itās looking like they need a new coach to bring him back, and I seriously mean drive the car lol
Dozzer
ParticipantI will add that according to Tree there was little to no retention needed in the league this year. Too many sellers as well. This is a deadline that saw both Kadri and Schenn move with 3 and 2 years left on their deals. Flames retained 20% and Blues retained 0 from what I can see. So laughton being cheap wasnāt as valuable as I originally thought.
They got Laughton last year and were division champs. Why would you not make a deal in that season? Itās only a 1st and they expected two playoff runs with him. Sadly the second didnāt come to fruition.
If we look and say a 1st, 3rd (condition to 2nd), 5th for Laughton and Roy I think everyone would be relatively happy. Iād like to hope the kings make the playoffs, give up the 2nd and the leafs resign Laughton.
Overall I give the deadline a C+. I still think they should have moved Jarnkrok, Benoit, possibly Maccelli as he is RFA and due for a raise above 3.4 million. Maybe stetcher or Carlo and even possibly OEL.
I do think the Carlo trade was a bit of an overpay but again, the leafs got the coveted RHD, under contract for last playoffs and this year AND next. Pricey to pay with only top 5 protected. Hindsight is 20/20 though. If they beat the Panthers last year, are we talking the same thing?
I heard rumblings of Stolarz being moved and I suspect a goalie will be gone in the summer. Hildebeast is no longer waiver exempt next year so they likely have to move off one of the guys.
Yeah, the only repeated decent draws seemed to be d men this year, agreed. We will see what the leafs are doing to move longer contracts out this off-season, which as you know thankfully are never typically deadline moves lol. I also think itās safe to consider the returns on these forwards were a bit low this year because the UFA group is looking a bit weak. So them and their agents likely werenāt on board with agreeing to an extension as part of a deal since the open market might pay out nicely this year. Hence why they didnāt draw all that much, since theyāre nothing more than rentals for a couple of months.
Dozzer
Participantthats what I was thinking, they could probably squeeze one 1st out of someone. but doubt much more.
Tre way overpaid for Carlo and Laughton, now he will sell at a big loss. if he even trades them.this guy is smrt
nailed it. got one 1st. not much more. sold Laughton at a lossThe only way Laughton makes any sense is the overpayment was due to him being bought to finish last year, those playoffs, and this year and what was expected to be playoffs as well. Philly also held half his contract. So it makes the price of selling him for nothing more than a third, being a half priced guy, even worse, unless heās just a rental that theyāre planning to resign in the off-season. Not my idea, Iām just wondering if theyāre thinking this.
Dozzer
ParticipantHereās hoping the selling brings back some useful stuff. I mean I know it will be a late round pick, but at least Marner turned into a 1st.
