Participant3.5M is not a top 6 winger. Move Kampf and Reaves out, and we have like 9M and change, not to mention Jarnkrok.
Let’s see what Tree can do before opening night; it’s only July 2nd.
They’re not spending over $25 million on the top line. They had a top line winger making less than a million last year. Also you guys are also dismissing the possibility of Cowan who won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy just like Marner did the year before his first year in the NHL.
They’re not going to go hand out another $7+ million multi year contract especially when the GM isn’t signing anyone else to multi year contracts.

ParticipantNever said a star, but it’ll be a top 6, not a tweener, a legit top 6 RW. Win now, they’re not going to want to take a massive step back next year, not with how their contracts line up for expiry, especially on the backend.
$3.5 million is about all they’ll spend on the top line winger role now. That would literally put the top line over 25% of the salary cap.
The highly paid Marner is out, and has been replaced with Knies, who is literally only making about $3 million less, hence why they can spend that on the other winger. Which means they’d be spending about the same amount on the top line as they were last year.
The overpaid top six days are done in Toronto. Good. Instead of an $11 million dollar winger and a $900K winger we have a $7.75 million winger and a $3.5 million dollar winger. They’d literally only be saving about $650K from last year doing this on that line.

ParticipantYou gotta figure Kampf and Jarny are on their way to San Jose. They need to get to the cap floor and now that their bonuses are paid, SJ can take on their full cap hits without having to pay real dollars for their contracts.
Yup, and now Jarnkrok will only cost $775K more and Kampf will only cost $3.48 million more post this years bonuses.

ParticipantWhat’s to re-assess? They moved out Marner, they need to fill that roster spot, and the only UFA option is Ehlers, who’s a LW anyways and not a Berube player, so what else are they supposed to do?
They aren’t bringing in another star player. That has been the complaint. The leafs were built wrong. Too many stars and not enough character.
It will be an average winger who can feed Matthews and Knies for that line moving forward and that is it. They’re already spending $20 million on the top line, they won’t be spending much more. The person who gets added will be carried by those two, not a guy who will be expected to carry those two.

ParticipantVinni Lettieri, boys, plan the parade.
Waiting for the pictures of him in Leaf PJs.
Another 1 year deal.
A bottom six build up year just like I mentioned. My primary curiousity at this point is who are they going to dump and how.
Dozzer
ParticipantYup.
As I posted earlier, grab a skinner, patches and or Nyquist on one year deals….get two or all three.
Im sure cowan will play a role as well.Or maybe spend a little more and get one of Olofsson, beauvillier or roslovic…but the term may need to be longer
I’m beginning to guess term isn’t something Treliving is willing to offer this year. Why? I won’t even pretend to know. My guess is it’s because unlike previous GMs he’s simply not seeing anyone he likes as more than a one year fill in.

ParticipantSounds like that “loophole” is going to be closed in the next CBA, and a lower percentage of the contract can be paid in signing bonuses. So now, not only are we dealing with higher tax rates for Canadian players, (which, fuck you Gary Betman, is 1000% a MAJOR consideration for players), it’ll be harder to attract Americans to play in Canada.
Why bother?
Americans in Canada is the easy part.
As I’ve said it’s just like Matthews. He only gets paid league minimum and gets everything else as a bonus while living in Arizona on July 1st.
The tough people to keep in Canada are the Canadians, and there are loads of Canadian stars and that’s who they currently want in the US.

ParticipantThe ship has sailed but I was really hoping to get Brown in the bottom-6 because he’s an exceptional penalty killer and still puts up 30 points / season with limited opportunity to do so.
One way of looking at it is that Marner scored roughly 30 goals but a healthy Auston Matthews will make up half of that. Nic Roy will contribute another 15 from the third line. If Maccelli works out, you get another 15 or so. The question isn’t the offense, per se, it is the penalty killing and the defensive awareness that Marner brought. As much as we all got frustrated when he’d screw up, he did make a lot of good defensive plays and was typically reading plays well and being in the right position to stop plays from developing. Maccelli has some larger shoes to fill there – a more mature Knies will help, a healthy Matthews will help – but I did want them to find a faster guy or two to enhance that PK.
Lots of summer left. Not a lot of options.
Yeah I’m not really seeing much of a free agent year for the leafs tbh. Everyone seemed to be expecting some sort of big move when all I’ve truly expected was a build up of the bottom six.
Maybe when it comes to replacing Marner the leafs will just use the most recent London Knight who won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy ????
Dozzer
Participantwhile I dont buy the, you have to replace Marners 100 points thing. there is more too it. Like the 2 players you mention take other players spots or push others down..who would have also produced.
but these are the /82 game production for them
Macelli 46
Roy 38 (41 over past 4 seasons)Both those are prob on the low side, but maybe they dont play full 82
I get what you’re saying hence my low estimates but who are they replacing? Kampf, Jarnkrok, Reaves, Robertson? Hell, those 4 didn’t even land 50 last year.
I won’t miss Marner, he’s got great hands and he’s a fantastic passer but he’s simply not worth what a Canadian team would have to pay to keep him around. Keep targeting the American players Toronto, that way you give it all to them as a bonus July 1st while they live in the US and only pay them league minimum through the season just like you do with Matthews.

ParticipantYup. It’s a long shot, but it’s still a shot. I’m sure he’s not happy losing in back to back Cup finals, I’m sure he’s not happy losing in 6 vs 7 (step back for their team) and I’m sure he’s not happy with how free agency has gone. They lost a lot of guys and replaced them with only Mangiapane. They haven’t addressed the tendie situation at all, and other teams in their division loaded up. Plus, LA has a guaranteed ticket to lose in the finals with Perry.
I get what you’re saying but how in the hell do the leafs sign him without getting rid of Matthews? That would have to happen.
Dozzer
ParticipantSo I’m just looking things over and here’s a little interest.
Maccelli: $3.43 million (40P estimate)
Roy: $3 million (30P estimate)Find another guy for $3 million who can dump 30P in and bang, there’s Marner’s 100P replaced for $9.43 million while offering far more balanced scoring.

ParticipantIt’s starting to look like the leafs are looking to use short term contracts this year unless it’s a core guy. As it stands 5 forwards are done after this year. I won’t be shocked if that’s all the leafs do to fill out the roster because there is nothing they currently see available that they consider a long term solution.
Dozzer
ParticipantYou know an interesting thing . . . has anyone seen any of the Leafs players post farewells to Marner? Knies reposted the Leafs PR release. Usually teammates post emotional farewells to their friends and I haven’t seen anyone say anything about it.
I’m not saying they wanted it to happen or that they’re happy it did – but it doesn’t feel like anyone is all that devastated that he left. I find that a little strange. I don’t think he was a problem in the room – but maybe some of that yelling he was doing at the team while he was also flailing and failing was just wearing a little too thin.
I heard him chatting with the guys on sportsnet today and he mentioned everyone on the team and didn’t bring him up once. It’s sounding like Marner isn’t being missed.
Dozzer
ParticipantFriedman suggests that Naz interested in coming home. Would probably cost more than those two
Toss Maccelli in there? ????
Dozzer
ParticipantI think getting Kadri back would be a fucking stunner move. #93 this time too. Perfect time for him to bring the Cup experience and Cup home. Didn’t really want him to leave in the first place.
Tavares can take the draws, or teach him cuz he’s a 48.7%, but then let him do the center role and dish some sauce to WIlly and JT, while JT catches his breath on the D side ???? (I know they’re the same age)
Knies, Matthews, Domi/Marcelli
Tavares, Kadri, Nylander
McMann, Roy, Marcelli/Domi
Lorentz, Laughton, PezzMcCabe, Tanev
Reilly, Carlo
Benoit, OELStoli
WollFuck ya. That team can hurt and score. I’m in!!!
Can’t do 93’ but he’d want 91’ anyways and I think JT at C on that line and Kadri out as the winger. JT has the faceoffs and the front of net work down and Kadri does board work beautifully when it comes to some of their personal strengths.
