I “think” ..if they’re comparing the Peterka contract to Knies that the true comps would be 6 x $7M. RFA years worth less than UFA years and Peterka was selling 3 RFA and 2 UFA years. Knies is selling 4 RFA years plus additional UFA years. I’d say Leafs end up doing a 3 yr deal or 6+. 6 or 7 would make sense for both b/c Knies would be 28 or 29 for his next big ticket. Or maybe he takes an 8 yr deal while it’s still available and he’d still be 29/30 when he’s able to negotiate the next one.

    6x7M or 7×7.5M or 8×8 ish

But, leafiness and taxes probably end up changing the logic.

    anyone see this

Frank Seravalli: If it’s an 8 year deal for Matthew Knies, it’s going to be north of 10; it’s probably going to end up being a 5 year deal – DFO Rundown

    ok then.
peterka just got 5 x 7.7 ..so I guess around that then

Guenther in Arizona might be the perfect comparison for Knies. Age, numbers, ….it’s all very close. He signed 8 x 7.14 before the season (early extension). Peterka, a year older then both so there’s one less year of control, slightly better resume because of the extra year, and he gets 7.7 x 5 from Zona’ too.

Leafs need to prioritize signing guys earlier rather than waiting for them to build their resumes and for the Cap to go up.

also I could see him getting UFA offers like 7 or 8m x 4 or 5 years ~ Sensie

Oh ya ..he could walk like Stamkos if he prioritizes gettin’ paid.

if JT was getting money from another contract, the leafs and JT would still be “wide apart”, thats how it works …Sensie

Truth. Are you saying that if JT is getting an allowance from his mom the Leafs won’t get a discount?!

Seriously though …..Duchene at 4.5M in Dallas gets to shove ~2.9M in his pocket every year. Leafs will have to go ~$6M x 4 for JT to do the same.

Also ..I’m sure Tree is pointing out Nelson is a year younger (and will age/skate better) then JT so that 7.5M comp needs to be viewed accordingly. Fine, you’re a year older so maybe 7.5M x 2 is the comp ..now stick 3 years on the end at $4M, $1M, and $1M …and now you get that down to $21M over 5 yrs. Maybe you have to bump it a bit to account for tax differences.

My limits for JT would be something like …
    5×4.6 (8,8,4,2,1)
    4×5.5 (8,8,4,2)
    3×6.3 (7.5,7.5,4)

If he doesn’t like it so be it ….he did nothing significant in the playoffs and is declining. You can rent JT’s at the deadline without destroying your cap for years.

Change the DNA is get rid of Rielly, the stripped captain and most of the bottom-six. UG

For what it’s worth Lebrun reported that Rielly/Leafs told him that Rielly will be back …will not waive NMC.

DNA/Change is really down to two options …..don’t re-sign Marner or re-sign Marner and trade Nylander. One of them is moving on and frankly, with all the talking heads reporting that Marner told Tree last summer he wasn’t talking contract until the end of the season, I have to believe he’s gone.

    Knies-Matthews-PKane
    Ehlers-Bennett-Bystander
    McMann-Tavares-Domi
    Big 4th line …..

The math could work. Kane and Tavares do 1 yr deals. Leafs have a bunch of room next summer. If Bennett stays in Florida ….maybe it’s Duchene or Nelson.

Who cares what Brad says to the press. Sounds like things are cold with MM and warm with MK ….Tavares is a we’ll see. Change the DNA tells me that he wants to change the core …change the soul.

I think he wants to do the right thing …lets see if he can.

For the record I take Marner over Nylander every day, but ….

Against Florida on ice 5v5 GF/GA was ..

    Nylander 6/6
    Marner 6/7
    Matthews 6/6
    Knies 6/7
    Tavares 5/8
    Holmberg 0/6

34/16 had the tougher assignments (ie. Barkov) but 91/88 had the burden of playing a lot of minutes with Holmberg.

Frank Seravelli on Sportsnet this morning said the leafs have been gauging interest in marner with other teams since last summer. No team wanted to a trade unless it came with an extension. Apparently, leafs were looking for a deal they liked and then were going to approach marner. He also said that he has spoken with several players who have been in the “orbit” (his word) of the core 3 and in the “orbit” of other top players in the league and he was told that the core 3 just dont work hard enough, seem complacent and dont seem to want it as much as others. That seems to fly considering what we’ve seen the past several years.

Ya, I find Seravelli pretty ‘dramatic’ so I think that’s likely more opinion then fact BUT, I agree …Leafs need an alpha or two in the mix.

Even Florida has Barkov and Reinhart (people have doubted both have “heart” over their careers) but they surround them with Bennett and Tkachuck types.

    Gotta have the right mix.

Poor Tree had about 6 weeks on the job before Marner’s NMC kicked in so this is a Dubas reality. Although Tree did lock in Nylander when, in theory, he could have moved on from him instead. I know 88 had a very productive year …but remember how he played from October-January last season? He hounded the puck every shift …he was arguably the best player in the NHL for long stretches of time …we haven’t seen that since he autographed that very expensive paperwork.

    Change is needed.

The Cap needs to get fixed.

Rantanen’s 12M in Dallas equates to about $15.75 in Canada. Yes, RCA’s may soften the tax blow (although the player would have to take residency in the US when they retire, they’d have to park 50% of their income into the RCA during their career ….And, RCA’s are under legal attack by CRA right now) but if I’m a high earning player there’s so many reasons to head south.

Canadian kids/residents have it the worst from a tax perspective. Matthews, Knies ..can use US residency and bonuses to come out nicely but JT, MM ..can’t escape.

At smaller salaries ..no biggy. But at 10M+ the tax gap has become waayyyyyy too big a difference. After tax dollars probably creates more problems then it solves but surely they can move to a luxery tax or have some kind of flat tax discount (5%) or whatever.

Canadian teams, the Rangers, and some others are at a ~15% disadvantage on the Cap. Imagine these teams having even 5% ($5M) back in the pot. That’s another middle six forward or top 4 dman. Or reverse that, imagine Florida without the ability to add Jones and Marchand b/c they don’t have the cap space.
